Well I have been reading about this and from what I can see the difference between the Ls2 and L76 is the active fuel managment and the compression ration so these cars are able to run on regular fuel. Also something different with the Cam timing? I guess what I am getting at is why didn't they go with the Ls2?

EPA fuel rating. they had a hard enough time selling the G8 they did not need a gas guzzler tax on top of it

Finally someone responded. Yeah the gas guzzler tax is a load of bullshit, Just another way for the government to take what isn't theres. I thought it would have been pretty cool though having the LS2 or the LS3.

I would imagine it wouldn't take much to retrofit an LS9...

No it wouldn't take a lot to put an LS9 in it. Same as any LS car really.

Heads/cam/intake/compression. those are your differences in the motors.

Everything other then the cam in the L76 is better then the LS2. With the L76 you are getting a LS2 block with a LS3 intake and L97? heads (not 100% sure of the number) that are better flowing then the LS2 heads. If you are moding and planing on doing a cam swap the L76 is a better starting point then the LS2.

I'm not sure the intake situation is better, but I'm not sure it's worse either. Isn't the compression lower on the L76 so you could run regular fuel vs the premium that the LS2 guys are required?

This is from the December 2009 edition of Chevy High Performance.

LS2: The first of the GEN IV small-blocks, the 400hp LS2 was first unvieled in the 05 corvette. Compared to its LS1 and LS6 forbears, it boasted a larger 4.000-inch bore while retaining a 3.622-inch stroke, which bumped displacement to an even 6.0 liters. At its core, the LS2 resembles an enlarged LS6. It utilizes LS6 cylinder heads, as well as an 01 spec LS6 camshaft. Subtle differences include a larger 90mm throttle body (75mm on LS1/LS6), a higher 10.9:1 compression ratio, and a different intake manifold. Interestingly, the LS2 intake manifold features slightly greater plenum volume and recontoured runners, which actually flows less than the LS6 intake. For hot rodders, one of the key advantages the LS2 has over its smaller bore counterparts is that it's compatible with the highly desirable rectangle-port L92 cylinder heads.

DISPLACEMENT: 364 ci
BLOCK: Cast aluminum
Heads: Aluminum 15-degree cathedral port
BORE/STROKE: 3.900 x 3.622
COMPRESSION 10.9:1

L76: Used primarily in light-duty trucks, the L76 is essentially an aluminum block variant of the LY6. Major differences include a higher compression ratio and a slightly larger cam, which boosts output to 366 hp and 376 lb-ft. Like the LY6 the L76 utilizes variable valve timing, but ups the ante even further with active cylinder deactivation. Interestingly, the L76 also powers the Pontiac G8 GT. The car version of the L76 drops variable valve timing and features an LS3 intake mainfold, which sacrifices some hp while picking up some torque.

DISPLACEMENT: 364 ci
BLOCK: Cast aluminum
Heads: Aluminum 15-degree rectangle port
BORE/STROKE: 4.000 x 3.622
COMPRESSION 10.4:1

The L76 Compression is 10.4:1 and the LS2 is 10.9:1.

Lots of good info here: http://forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=150

You really can't go wrong either way. Both are good motors.
