Victor, beautiful car man I must say! New to the forums and your car caught my eye right away. I have an 06 GT myself, 3.5mps with supporting mods. Im trying to make the decision weather to go turbo or not, and just wondering what your experience has been thus far? Do you daily drive your car? Has reliability changed at all and hows your fuel ecomony? Do you run a dual stage boost controller to run higher boost or something? Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the kind words. :)

If you already are supercharged I would stay that route. Over the last 6 months or so that the car as been turbo'd it has been a whole new animal, but I find myself constantly working out the bugs. Just this weekend I had the O2 bung plug work it way out and come off about 20 miles from the shop. I drove it back and installed a spare O2 sensor in its place, but now it is missing at WOT in boost. I figure that 20 miles or so were extremely rich considering the car is running at 10.5 AF on a normal day and that f**ked up my Autolite 103's.

For me it has been little problem after little problem, so it is great that it isn't a daily driver anymore.

To get the higher boost I just turn up the boost controller. The car sees 15 MPG or less when driving hard and it has seen 28-30 MPG on the freeway when staying out of it.

Glad to see its holding up and your having fun with it!

What range of boost are you running in like the lowest and highest you go?

Some people have higher streetability tolerance than others. I don't mind having a lumpy cam, crappy idle daily. Others cry at the idea that their exhaust is 10dc higher then stock lol its all relative. Plus if you stay off it the mpg is still there somewhat. I wish I could get 30mpg highway though :(

I run anywhere from 10psi to 15psi and leave the cutout open about 90% off the time unless the wife is in the car. It is impossible to stay out of the gas, but the mpg isn't bad if you have the willpower.

On ZZP's website they list for the 04+ modified vaccum fitting, What is this?

Thanks, AJ

P.S. what is that line you have running from your fuel rail to your driver side strut tower and what is it connected to. Is it a fuel pressure regulator?

The vacuum fitting takes the place of your stock MAP sensor (on the passenger's side of the intake), and this allows you to have an easy access point for all of your vacuum lines.

The braided line from the fuel rail is for the sending unit on my electric fuel pressure gauge. The 2004+ cars do not have a regulator on the rail like the 97-03's. I will most likely end up adding aftermarket rails from the 97-03 along with a rising rate regulator (the more boost, the more the pressure). Then I will also need to add a return line to the tank which the 04+ does not have stock. Hope this helps.

I thought it was an electric gauge! I need to see how this is setup.

Please, maybe if your not busy you could take some close up pics of your vac lines and your engine bay?? I would greatly appreciate it .

Thanks, AJ

I will bring my camera to the office tomorrow and take some more close up shots.

The just of the vacuum line routing is as follows....

At the passenger side of the intake you can see the brass fitting. This fitting is installed in the MAP sensor replacement part that ZZP supplied for me. The fitting is a TEE and allows for two lines to be ran to supply vacuum. The front line that runs in front of the intake runs just past the MAF into a TEE, then one side of the TEE supplies the boost gauge and the other side supplies the BOV (Blow Off Valve). The second line out of the MAP has a TEE right off the fitting and points out one vacuum line to the passenger side and one to the drivers. The passenger side runs in from of the alternator and over to the strut tower, there it goes into the boost controller and out of the other side. This line then runs down to the top port on the Wastegate. The line out of the drivers side of the TEE turns behind the alternator and runs to the port on the side of the wastegate.

Note... I do NOT run a MAP sensor on my car. It throws a code with or without it for the sensor so I just chose to go without for a cleaner install.

I know all that may seem confusing. If you are going to be an install I would be more than happy to help walk you though anything you need.

Makes since since im building my kit based of the z3 kit and I have a supecharged 06 I will be switching to the L26 intake and using the L32 map sensor. I will just have to tap my lines of the line that goes to the map sensor.

One last question what where the fuel rail spacers made of and what size where they as for as length? And did you have to use longer fuel rail bolts?

Thanks ALot for the pics it makes much more since now.

The spacers are nylon and about a 1/4" think. Three of the four mounting points use nuts and one uses a bolt. The new bolt will need to be a little bit longer.

Thanks Chris, It has been a long time in the making since I started as a rental car. :)

That TEE splits the vacuum line for the BOV and boost gauge to share.

Hey Dave, are you still having the little problems here and there or have they cleared up for the most part? I heard the biggest downfall to turboing the grand prix is constantly having to screw with the tune, has this been true in your case?

I am still running the tune that turbo tim sent me. The only problem that I have is the plugs getting fuel fouled and needing changed about once a month. I plan to have the car tuned before the end of the month though and hopefully that will cure the rich problem. Other than that the car goes like stink.

I got rid of the stocker and added a black round overflow to the passenger side firewall. Looks much better and gives me room for the boost controller where I wanted it.

After some thought and some IAT issues over summer I broke down and started the intercooler upgrade project. Original small intercooler did the job, but now that I have turned up the boost, it will not be cutting it.

Original
28" x 7" x 2-1/2"
2-1/2" Outputs

New
32" x 12" x 4"
3" Outputs

The front bumper support has been notched to accept the much bigger cooler, but still will provide some protection. The hood latch support has been removed and reworked with 1"x1" Aluminum square stock. The intercooler will also be supported by the square stock. Reworked the intercooler piping and started to move the BOV to the bumper area.

You pooped in my car Dane. lol

Glad you liked it. Doesn't take long to go from 40 to 120. Car also goes pretty straight when spinning from 40 to 60.

-- Thu Nov 04, 2010 9:58 am --

I just read this post again and boy does it bring back some memories. Thought I would give a quick update on my turbo adventure as of late.

We have a nice group of guys now in a group called PA Wbody Syndicate. We have been doing some meets and getting into the usual trouble. On October 16th we had a meet at Pittsburgh Raceway Park and it was a huge success with Dthreap (Derek) along with Wingman520 (Brian) from Ohio and OnMy2ndGP (Anton) from DC making a total of 13 cars racing. I believe we had 6 3800 cars trapping over 105 and right at the cusp of 12's.

I still have not launched the car hard yet just gave it a little more out of the hole, but on the top end it is a monster. Traction is a serious issue on the street tires, but with the trap it is pulling it has put down quite a few cars with faster ET on street runs. Just for some frame of reference, when the car was a bolt on N/A car my fastest 1/4 trap was 89mph, I can now accomplish that in just the 1/8 mile. Car picked up 26 mph over the bolt on N/A!

We are at 126% injector duty cycle on the 42's and that is pushing the car from the 10.5 A/F up to a 11.5 A/F just based on lack of fuel. 11.5 is right in the power area, but I can't take it any further. 65lbs injectors are on my bench and going in over winter. This car is still 100% on the box ZZP tune at this point. We will be tuning it on the 65's, adding valve springs, turning up the boost to 16-17psi and hoping for 120 traps on the stock trans next year.

Thanks again for all the support over the years guys.

12psi
2.187 60'
8.590 @ 88.76 1/8
13.01 @ 111.11 1/4

14psi
