I recently took the car in for emissions, and it's off the charts.. so it failed. I passed the idle tests, but none of the drive ones.
I am under the impression the catalytic converter on my downpipe is actually gutted and is just there for show.

Now since the EGR was deleted, is there anything else I can do to help it pass? I am going to order a Magnaflow cat from ZZP, once I figure this out. Been googling but not coming up with anything relevant... I am not in a position where I can "bribe" someone to make it pass. I'd rather have it produce less emissions...

So, before I go back in, I'm going to put my new wires in, new spark plugs with better gap for my setup, and possibly an updated tune of my car from Overkill with fuel economy mods.

Should I look into a wideband? I didn't really want another gadget in the car, and I'd rather not spend another $300~, when I just learned I need a cat and my torque converter was faulty after the tranny upgrade...

Thanks!

in RI if you put more than 500 bucks into making your car pass emissions you get the sticker. but it only is good for the 2 years and has to be fixed by then. buy like some piping and 4 universal cats. sort of what i did to the vw. i cut out the resg. and threw a cat in, but the car is OBD1

We have a pass fee of $450 here if I REALLY wanted to, but I don't want to deal with that junk every 2 years. I am still waiting on ZZP to fulfill my order for catalytic converter. It's been a week, no response as to if it's been shipped...

no EGR is what your problem is. Contrary to popular belief, EGR does nothing to lower your vehicles performance, because it shuts off at WOT. It is just a carry over from the old days when you had to remove it to make your car run properly. It can cut your emissions as much as 75% on a steady cruise.

You guys still have emissions testing like that? Here in Chicago we just have to bring the car in and they hook it up to a scanner and check the computer for codes. No code=pass.

You know, I saw a guy's car last week with the same kit as me, and his EGR was intact. I guess I assumed it was suppose to come off from what I had read on ClubGP last year. They are all "take it off", "it's not needed", etc.

Well, I guess it'll be going back on at some point, still working on the car.. It better see the light of day this year for a few weeks!

Have you checked out TEP? http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com/4T ... age_2.html

Or is it just a waranty issue

I bought parts from him for the build over the past year so I could chip away at it. The converter doesn't have a problem after all, so that was a waste. I had someone else take a look at the transmission out of the car, he said there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Something went wrong with the removal/reinstall by the shop, because there's an electrical issue somewhere I can't find.

I now have the transmission out, the engine out, all the harness apart... Basically the car is gutted and I am trying to find the problem. I refuse to spend a cent more, since it's put me behind and I am finally getting caught up and trying to pay off a debt.

The only thing left to check, is the brake pedal switch. We figured maybe the car was seeing that the brake was applied (but not setting off the brake light), which is then telling the car to ground the TCC solenoid, which means the car will never lockup the converter. It's a long shot, but after going through all the troubleshooting steps someone printed me off from GM, there's not much else to check.

FRIGGIN RIDICLOUS.

Thats why i love South Carolina... no emissions test at all. my buddy ran his cutlass dumping out the manifold for 10 years.

no one has cat-converters down here
