I was looking into picking up a used pcm from someone on the board, but then remembered that all the vendors ask you for your vin.

Would the PCM even work? Someone told me that my airbag light would be on and I would receive a DTC...

Good question. I have a ZZP PCM for an 04 GTP CompG. I assumed no one was interested b/c of the VIN difference.

VIN of the vehicle ( this is stored on the BCM and PCM - both are used to verify VIN during security mode diag/Start ).

If the VIN of your vehicle does not match the the VIN on the PCM then it will go into theft/security mode - Car wont start. You can use the PCM, you would just need to copy your factory PCM data file and overwrite the current file on the other PCM. Then modify the parameters you would like and the PCM will have your VIN. I did this with a PCM I found in a junk yard and Now I have a PCM with Factory settings and one with modified.

NOTE: You can add just the VIN but it is safer to copy the whole data file so the parameters match for your vehicle.

My Overkill PCM had a different VIN than my car (and he programmed it in person when I got an incar tune) and it worked fine.

The VIN was changed during the programming, as the VIN is a requirement to match on both the BCM and PCM for the security diag. That is why when you do a security relearn ( this is also for the PASS 3 key programming ) and the VIN does not match then the relearn will fail.

You can always try it,but from my experience and trying it myself it would not work without the proper VIN.

No, I am saying the VIN is physically different on the PCM. I know this because I dumped my BIN with my DHP Tuner and the VIN isn't right at all. So, there's proof right there. I still don't know why a security relearn is needed sometimes, since I've never had to do it, even with multiple PCMs being swapped in and out.

I was always worried I'd have to do it, since I wouldn't have the patience!

Wow Weird, I have never seen that and also use the same tuner software, and you didn't have to do a security relearn? Could you possible send a copy of the BIN file? Im curious about how that is working lol.

It must not be working well, because I couldn't modify and upload my BIN properly afterwards. I bricked two PCMs, both at the 99% mark at the VIN write. It wouldn't let me change it manually, or change it with the upload. I had to ship a PCM out (3rd one) to have someone else write the file so I could get the car working. If you want to see the file, PM me your email address. I have it in *.rar format at home (BIN file of course)

PMed

Hmm, I wonder if DHP tuners might be pulling an old .dat file for the bins and might be causing that issue. But that was on vista, XP I havent had a issue.

After viewing the file you are right it does work with a invalid vin, I see when it fails at the 99% I had to reflash the PCM after the file lol. Did the file always do this or was there a change/small modification?
