So, I was thinking that I should toss the idea out there for a member map but only for members that have tuners and/or scanners so that other members in need can see if there is anyone near them to get a hold of for tuning or SES light issues. If people are interested I'd be more than happy to get one up and working. Let me know what you guys think. As a side note, the map would not include your actual address (i.e. house number and so forth) but instead just your city and state, or province for you Canadians. Just something to give members an idea if people with these tools are around them.

Edit (12/15/2009): I tried making a public one where everyone can add themselves and whatnot, but I couldn't figure anything out that would work, so I resorted to Google maps. So anyone that would like to be added just PM me. For now, here's the map containing a whole 1 member. Spread the world around the forum so we can get some more poeple added to this.

I'd be in for something like that. I'm always willing to help people out if I can!

I would definitely like something like that, it would be nice to be able to tweak my tune if necessary.

Planeboy, if you want to get a list started, I'm in Fayetteville, AR. I use HPT, so the licensing thing is a bit of a hindrance.

I'll work on a map this weekend and hopefully try to set it up so people can add themselves and such. I'll keep you guys posted.

Bump: Map has been created and the link is in my first post. Now we just need more people so this map can actually help others out.

I think the reason you're not seeing many volunteers is that by putting your name and location on a map saying you'll tune cars violates the licensing agreement that comes with buying a tuner. Anyone that puts their name on that map is openly admitting to breech of and contract and is opening them self up to a lawsuit by the company that created the tuner. With the PowrTuner you have to buy a commercial license. With HP Tuners, you have to buy credits.

So, with the HPTuner,...
You buy the credits & you're good to go...

And, with the PowrTuner,...
The company doesn't exist, so there's no licensing agreement to violate...
The last Database released gave every owner of the PT full access to all supported cars.

Plus, working out an SES light, Case Learn,... I don't think that's an issues, regardless?

That being said, I do street tunes & live in Rockford, IL 61103

Are you sure?

Charles was pretty strict on that. Even though the PowrTuner is no longer sold, it's still Charles' intellectual property which is still protected under copyright. IIRC, that lasts for the life of the creator plus 50 years.

Okay, if that was the case...
I can't "charge" to use the software...
So, Uploads & Downloads of BIN files aren't charged for...
I don't use the PowrTuner scanning software...
I don't use the PowrTuner to edit BIN files...
I don't use DHP files...

I still don't see a problem

In the end, there wasn't a "commercial license" version of the software...
It was all the same... I don't see how there could be a differential between the 2?

I guess I'm just really cautious because I have to stay on top of all the licenses here at the office as far as how many work stations have copies of things like photoshop or whatever.

The Commercial License used to cost $2500. Go to the PT site and search commercial license. There are many posts from people wanting to know if they can use the PT for other peoples cars since it is now wide open.

I guess I never thought of the copyright part of all of this. Whoops. Even though it may be an infringment on the end user contract, it's not like the company can come sue you for all the money you didn't make from using the product on other people's cars. However, thanks for bring that up Blackwood.

When the issue was brought up on the PowrTuner site a couple of years ago. Charles wasn't concerned whether or not the person tuning made money. The problem was that it took money away from him because that was 1 person less to buy a PowrTuner or a DHP PCM. Like you said, the company is no longer in business so that's not the issue anymore. My concern is that I've seen the wrath of Charles come down on some of his most loyal contributors to the PowrTuner community. People that stood by his side defending for many years were thrown in the fire towards the end because they questioned him.
My advice is to proceed with caution.

Thanks Dan. Too bad it's a little too simple right now with only 2 people.

Lol! It'll grow. Maybe as it grows, we can find a way to include a bit better map option, like something that will indicate either scanning only, or tuning and what brand.

Yeah, it'd be awesome if this could really get some people on it. We should advertise this more so we can get a good list of people from all over the place.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but, wouldn't this be impossibe? From what I'm gathering, you guys are trying to locate people with scanners to help fellow people tune their cars. However, the problem with this is, with most tuners, you can only have one tune at any time. So, to tune someone elses car, you would have to return the stock tune to your car and tune their car. Then to retune your car, you would have to return the stock tune to their car. Is there some magical way around this? I was going to purchase a used Diablo Predator until I heard about this.

Am I wrong on this one?

Yes you are wrong, sorry. With the programs that the members on here are using, you get credits or something like that and can tune as many vehicle pcms as you'd like through using the laptop program to write the coding to the pcm, however, that doesn't in any way affect your own codes. Indeed you can have only 1 tune at a time (since these car's don't have engine mangagment systems that let you change tune on the fly, though that cars that do have that option *the sauerkraut* it's pretty freaking awesome) but when you can save as many tunes as you want to your laptop it really doesn't matter. Just tune your own car/s, save the tune in the laptop in case you need to go back to it every again and modify it, and then just create a new tune file for whatever other car you want to work on. That doesn't erase the first file you created and even if it did, your pcm is still flashed anyway. If you create a microsoft word document, you dont' have to delete the previous document to work on a new one. Same concept.

I'm not familier with the diablo product, but if it's what I'm thinking it is, then it's just one of those out of the box cookie cutter handheld devices that just flashed the pcm or you keep it plugged into the obd port and it just works in sync with the pcm. However, the way most members on here feel (at least from what I've gathered) is if you're going to tune, do it yourself or have another member do it and don't use some default setup that's marketed to "work great for everyone."

The program that my friend just got is called HPtuner and how it works is it comes with 8 credits to use towards tuning. Each vehicle PCM requires the use of 2 of those credits, so he could tune 4 different vehicle pcms without ever having to touch his own tune, and if he wanted to tune more cars, just buy more credits (50 bucks a piece) so in theory, if you have enough money you could tune as many cars as you want.

I'm assuming that this whole tune, go back to stock, tune someone elses car, go back to stock thing is the problem with the Diablo product, but is not the case with HPT and the other tuning softwares these members own.

***someone please explain this better than I did.***
