Been wanting a tune for some time now and overkill will seems to have the best reviews, not looking for which canned tune to go with as that question has been asked hundreds of times. What im looking for is the differance in mpgs going from a stock tune-to in this case an overkill tune. Now i know driving habits have a ton to do with it along with many other factors, just trying to get a general idea if there is more potential for better gas milage or if it kills it all together. On the overkill website it sates "Increased Fuel Economy Potential"?? and i now alot comes into play with this "potential" increase but is it noticable/justifiable?

Also i do have friends that have hp tuner setups and all i would have to do is pay for credits and pickup a wideband, but they are all LS-1,2 and 3 guys and im assuming there are big differances in tuning say a rear mount boosted stroked LS3 GTO to my supporting mod only comp g. Not to sure that i want my dd to be the test dummy for them at this time unless there are enough simularites in the mapping of the pcm's.

Also can anyone chime in on a wideband tune?? I know the idea behind it but dont know the nuts and bolts of it.

Any insite would be greatly appreciated!!

I running a overkill tune and my gas mileage went down maybe 2 mpg but runs a lot smoother so i can also blame my foot for that.

custom/wideband tune = best f*c*in tune for your car period

canned tune just do general mods to the pcm, the custom will be specific for every and all your engine operations. think of it like an oven mitt (can tune) vs a welders glove (custom tune) the welders will win everyday

With most tunes, especially a wideband custom tune, you'll actually net more gas mileage as long as your driving habits remain the same as pretune. As long as you keep it out of boost your mileage will be great.

My girlfriend get's 35ish+ the highway and she doesn't even attempt to hypermile and the tune is actually a tad rich at the moment. She is N/A though but still the L32/L67's can do just as well with a proper tune and conservative driving.

Thanks for the imput guys...i know the custome tune is the way to go and cheaper, im just not sure if i want guys who dont know there way around these cars messing with it too much. Im sure they could pull off the wideband tune since im assuming its done along the same basis for different vehicles but its the trans settings and other little things that not sure if they could do with out knowing the our cars. Ive tried to read and understand the whole tuning stuff but i have to face it im a total noob when it comes to anything that i can not physically tear apart. Would rather skip the trial and error of tuning my self hence the debating on getting the overkill tune...its not the best bet for the car but it would eliminate the guess work for me. Would it be benifical or make anysence to get an overkill pcm and then do a custom wideband on it?? (that is if i could afford that anytime soon)

I had no issues at all with the Overkill tune, my car ran and shifted so much better. I don't recall the gas mileage being drastically different so it must not have changed much.

X2 you wont notice your gas mileage drop drastically. I rather have a better shiftibg gp and give away some gas mileage then a stock shift and get maybe to more miles to the gallon

Thanks guys...i too would rather have a smoother better performing vehicle than better gas milage, i just have to convince and justify it with the wife, now that we got rid of her gp and she gets 34mpg in her cruze shes all about the mpgs. I want a tune regaurdless but shes denying me if "it dont help the car get better gas milage" and shes not sold on the "potential" increase lol.

Last question...if i were to pick up a stock 04 comp g pcm, throw it in and do a security re-learn would it work just fine given the cars are the same just different VIN's? or do i have to have my vin written the the new pcm. My thinking is to pick up an extra and try to tune it and still having my original to throw back in if need be... if all else fails get an overkill pcm and bite the core charge and be done with it.

I bought a used Grand Prix PCM for cheap on Ebay then sent it to Will as a core. As long as it's a 3800 PCM he will accept it.
