to change it would I have to drop the whole tranny? or can I get to it from the fluid pan? and would it make it run poorly? experience a loss of power? I knew it had to do with that sensor... I just didn't know if it would cause the issues Im having.

The whole transmission doesn't need dropped, but it does need lowered so you can take the case cover off in order to get to the sensor.

Honestly though, no idea on performance issues. In theory I could see there being issues due to Torque Management and shift settings being altered due to unresponsive ATF info, but this is only the 2nd time I've heard of this issue so I'm not all that familiar with it. Sorry.

If you go to the top right of the page ^^^^^ Click on the service manual. Then click on the Binoculars and search Document ID: 535742
That will give you the entire diagnostic procedure to ensure the sensor really is bad and that it's not just a broken wire or something else. If it is the sensor, step 8 has a link to the sensor replacement page and on that page there is a link to how to remove the side cover.

And if indeed the sensor does need to be replaced and it's not just a wire problem, this writeup with pics will help out a lot.
