ZZP sells their pan here. It claims to keep the tranny cooler. Is this $200 that's going to get me more miles out of my transmission (since it needs a flush anyway)? Does anyone bother with it?

nope all 97-08 use the same stamped metal pan.
Anyways I wouldn't bother with that, if you're concerned about temps get a real tranny cooler installed for half the price. Make sure to use fuel line style clamps instead of the worm clamps they give you.

The pan does work but not for the price. You could get a standard trans cooler to do the same thing if not better. BUT I do like Drain Bolt

I've heard from a couple other forums that some observed a 15* decrease in temps which is enough for me really.

I am ordering one this week

189.99 just seems a little to high. But if they lower the price I may be interested. That Drain bolt would make trans flushs easier

that would be the selling point for me, the trans drain plug/bolt. But Im not about to pay $200 for a drain plug and 15* cooler trans temps, thats ridiculous. Much better things to spend $200 on. But hey, if you've got the cash to spare then Id say go for it. Certainly couldnt hurt anything and it would make draining old trans fluid so much easier than unbolting and rebolting the whole pan itself every time

i have never seen an external trans cooler that did not leak at some point.

i have one question about the aluminum pan where does the magnet go?

For what it's worth:

I figure I'll agonize over the purchase later - hopefully Drunkie will be kind enough to write a review for it. I did however do the tranny flush and my fluid temp dropped 10* (70*F weather, 186*F down to 176*F, same workload). Perhaps this is why people might report a 15* drop in temp with the aluminum pan - could be 10* decrease for the new fluid, 5* for the cooler pan.

I have had 2 auxiliary trans coolers on 2 other cars, both ended up leaking over time.

I'll report back in July when I install it

-- Tue Jun 08, 2010 2:08 pm --

For what its worth...yesterday sitting in traffic 70* weather I saw 209* temps...

I plan to do a shift kit at the same time with this pan. I really need to see my temps drop, I did a flush last year with AMSoil. I hope with the new PCM which should kick my radiator fans on sooner I see some temp drops.

I also run the green coolant and I'm gonna flush the coolant again

IMO a tranny cooler is a fail waiting to happen. I lost a tranny on a former car due to a failed line on a tranny cooler. Under pressure you lose that fluid fast out of a failed line.

While I like the idea of having an aluminum pan w/drain plug to make servicing the trans easier, six years ago I bought one of these: Motive Power Extractor 1708
It works great, and I can remove the pan and change the filter without getting the hot oil bath.. ;-)

isn't the ZZP also deeper? the extra qrt or so would reduce temps just becuase the extra fluid can help absorb the heat.

i noticed this when i put a deep tranny pan on my 74 K10 the temps went down 30* with the 3 qrt extra capacity steel pan. it also had new fluid before that for the test.

So I got this tranny pan today.

I need to have my PCM programmed to kick on the fans at 180*...cause I notice my tranny temps will often be = to my coolant temps

Where are you guys getting the temp info from? Is there a thermocouple or temp probe that is used on our trannies? Maybe some type of kit? I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm interested in keeping my tranny in the car for as long as I can. The fluid is pretty black but it shifts fine :???:

5 button DIC's have the option to show Trans Temp.

Your welcome to come check out mine. 9 years being installed, never lost a drop, and they don't even "seep" around the fittings. Maybe I did it right the first time when I installed it... ;-)

I am at the point where I do not think I have a choice but to put a cooler in mine. The best option I can think of is to cut the factory lines on the hard sections, flare them, and run hard lines to the cooler.

What did you do with your connections on your Farns?

^About that what your thinking about doing.

Cut the factory lines on the rubber part as they leave the transmission, used some 1/4" ? male to male barbed fittings I bought from a local hard wear store. Added some stainless steel fuel line I bought from Summit Racing, and went to the cooler with that. I used some nice looking fittings that look like -AN fittings to attach the stainless steel lines with, so it covers the sharp edges of the stainless steel wrap, they have a regular hose clamp in them. I plugged the radiator holes with some simple brass plugs from the hard wear store as well just to keep crap out of there.

Cooler is a B&M Supercooler, also bought that from Summit. I think I have around $65.00 to $75.00 in my entire install. Transmission temps. normally stay around 170-185*F unless I am hard on the car, on a hot day, then I have seen it as high as 190 max. Before, 200*F+ was a everyday thing.

We did this to my sisters '98 Regal as well. Her factory tranny cooler, you know, on the side of the engine coolant radiator, it got a crack, and let coolant and tranny fluid mix. Pretty much it wiped out her transmission, so after that, we didn't trust the factory "idea of a cooler" anymore, so went this route. Not a single problem on her car either.

The kicker on others aftermarket leaks and failures on their installs is probably using cheap crappy fittings, and either not making sure they are tight after a few heat cycles, or not getting them tight to begin with. Its not common for a hose to pop off a barbed fitting. I have machines that use the same fittings, but 1/2" in side, and have well over 200 PSI of water flowing through them, and they do not require additional clamps on the fittings. I do anyway...its like a seat belt. LOL

Good info. Thanks for the reply. Most of this years mods will be cooling mods for me.

According to ZZP, the other size radiator they sell will not fit in a 2004+. My plan is to remove the stock rad all together and get a performance replacement as long as I can find a close size in the summit catalog.

Thanks again.
