My 04 GP transmission started to do some hard shifts,Probably around 3 weeks a go so i check the trans oil and it was not red no more It was a dark motor oil looking color.
Trans mission has 142,000 miles,

I then when a bought Dexron VI and a new filter and change them, Well the hard shifting when away, Untill yesterday when i when in a trip to san jose ca I live in Salinas ca so maybe
less tha 100 miles trip, I arrive and in the firts stop i do the car stars to shif hard, but not as hard as it did the firts time it started to do this.
Well drove the car for about 5 blocks park it and turn it off.

5 hours later turn the car on and drove it back home with no problems at all,So today i put some LUCAS trans additive,It says it will clean the inside of it and recondition the belts..Ect
I just put lucas for the clean part since i may change the trans oil and filter again this weekend just to make sure all of the old dirty oil come's out.
The hard shifting has not come back and when you press the pedal all the way it will take off and shif normal,No hard shifts or hesatation(spelling) smooth shifting,The trans work great.

Well i want to know if my trans i dieing slowly or what is the cause of this hard shifting (really dirty oil but not burn smell) out of nowhere,Has no come back but you never know
Will a newer transmission work in my car like a 06 07 08 years.?
I saw one with 34,000 miles for $500.00 shipped....What do you guys think ,Good deal yes or no.

Thanyou for your time reading this big post and help with this problem.

Ok,it's not belts it says it will clean and lubricate sticking valves and renews worn bands unless they are completly burned, I post belts but it say bands,Sorry.

I just put the lucas transmission thing for the cleaning and lubrication of the valves incase my tranny valves were sticking, The fluid was really dirty but no metal shavings or chunks just these thick grey film all over the tranny pan and filter/bottom of tranny,do you guys think If it was these dirty in the pan, those tha mean the inside of tranny will be the same or worse.
Will tha be something tha will cause the hard shifting...It has not come back.

I was wondering the same thing. My tranny is starting to die too. It takes a couple of seconds after you put it in drive for it to actually kick in to gear. So, can I get a newer tranny to swap it out with? By the way, 167,000 mikes on mine.

There shouldn't be a issue, but there are a couple things to look at. There are two types for our trans- 4t65e ( Base, GT ) trans, and 4t65e-HD ( GTP, Comp G ) trans. What you will need to consider is the differential gearing when looking for a trans. If you have a GT or Base your looking at 3.05 - 3.08 Diff gearing, if its a GTP or Comp G you will have a HD diff with the 3.29 gearing ( Note: some models include the tap shift option ). Now you can upgrade to the HD gearing but PCM programming will be required.

It would not work unless you got a new center console with TapShift and Steering Wheel with TapShift Paddle Shifters. And im sure the CompGs have some wiring that you dont have since CompGs have TapShift. I had my trans overhauled/rebuilt recently and I used the 3.29 gearing that a CompG has, but I bought it as a gear swap kit from ZZP. You cannot just swap in a CompG trans into a non-CompG GP without serious work and/or $$.

hot04gp and Barkat, it sounds like all you guys needed was to change the trans fluid and filter.....unless you are hard on the transmission they usually last 200,000+ miles or so. I know some members who have performed regular maintenance on their trans and have over 180,000 miles and going. No need to spend over $500 on a new transmission when you could just do a transmission fluid and filter change for less than $200

Well my tranny problem looks like it has gone away after the 2nd tranny oil change with dexron vi and new filter and I also open the accumulators the second time and they were dirty(grey film all avor the springs/inside) so i clean them up, I also feel tha the tranny downshifts faster now.
Oh and before i change the oil the second time i put some seafoam tranny cleaner it says to run it for less than 100 miles and then change it,I only run it for 40 something miles..????
Don't know if the cleaning of the accumulators help or the seafoam did the cleaning my tranny need it and the hard shifts had gone away and i hope they don't come back.

My hesitation on my transmission was a result of leaving my amp on (don't ask....laziness)

Though i still might pick up another transmission and build it up until the old transmission dies.

i did a trans filter/fluid change this past weekend. my fluid was just a dark red, and i noticed a difference after i changed em. i had 50k on my trans. i plan to do the trans drain every 25k from now on just so it stays healthy. i'm going to do a shift kit the next time i do it too. it only took me 1.5 hrs and it was the first time i had ever done it on my car. i could easily do it in about an hour now...

You just said an 05+ will fit an 04, then say there are differences, then list different part numbers. I'm confused. So it will fit but it's different?

Sorry, man I need more coffee.

It will bolt in,

But the connector pin outs are different and the internal eletronics are different. This is per the GM parts catolog.

Anything can be done as long as the pocket is deep enough.

Ill see if I can get the pin outs.

Yeah, but we could also all swap 6 speed manuals into these cars too if our pockets were deep enough, too bad this thread is regarding a direct replacement for a failing component.

So are you saying that it will bolt on, but will need tons of time and money to get it to work properly? In which case I dont' think that's what the OP intended on having to go through.

Humm,

Looking at the pin outs - I dont see any differance........

Ill have to look more into this.

-- Thu Apr 22, 2010 7:57 pm --

After a couple hours of looking for parts differenaces in the two transmissions I can not find anything that supports the catolog saying that it is a 1 year only transmission.

The problem is that it could be a small as a VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
