car is just about at 134k the previous owner was a mateniance freak he said thats hes pretty sure he remember having the hole pan dropped around 65-70k. but i just had a friend on his 2000 gtp drop his pan change the filter and all new fluid and 10k now he has no trans. his car only has 113k and it needs a rebuild. that being said is it worth it to just siphon out 2 quarts and replace it with new stuff?

In truth the KILLER tranny flush is a myth. What really happens is you will have worn Trans components that are used to the old trans fluid. When you change the fluid this can cause a break down process on worn out trans components and then cause failure. To avoid this you use the same type of trans fluid, and also once the fluid swap is completed dont drive it immediately - let the car set for some time and let the new fluid rejuvenate the trans components.

For me I did a trans flush at 75,000 miles, im due for one at 150,000. Also if the previous owner was a maintenance freak then you should be fine with the trans flush. One thing to look for is if the fluid still has a red tint or is it black - If its black then you MIGHT have component failure after the trans flush.

There was also some information on this at Triple Edge Performance but I can't find the link.

Hmm any idea what your trans temp averages? if it stays below 200 then your normally fine, If yours has been hitting the 200 to 215 on average driving its possible there might be a failure of components. Heat is the a key failure with the trans due to the fluid will break down at high heat so if you can keep the temps below 200 ( 140-159 is supposed to be the optimal - Trans cooler would be needed) then you will see longer life out of the fluid and less chance of component failure due to the fluid break down.

Sadly the three button DIC wont show the temps ( this is one of the reasons I switched to the 5 button DIC ). Have you noticed any issues with the shifting or input clutch slamming? If not then the flush should be fine.

If you want your tranny to last a long time, change it once a year.

Blackish/brownish is not good. When it's been heated, burned and broken down enough to lose color, it needs to be changed.

GM recommends going no longer than 50K miles between changes. As far as it causing a trans failure, it's just a chance you'll take. The problem is that if you leave that old fluid in there any longer, your chances of failure go up, whether or not you change it.
