Hello I'm a newbie looking to start with my first project and found a modded out GTP with a blown trans (only drives in 1st). I have found a few used take out trans but most places around here charge $400 to r/r the trans. Anyone done this that can elaborate on what is details (pics would be helpful)? How hard is this and what special tools or procedures are needed?

Thanks

Joe

Don't know how many pics I can provide, but I just did this again last week, and will try to do a basic write up of what needs to be done. More of a checklist than a step by step .. I will vet to it tomorrow morning. If nobody else does it first

This is also a good thing to look at for more pics of the steps but you can ignore the part about opening up the case.

Hey thanks for the responses. I appreciate the offer Big Dog (how long did it take you?) and Planeboy a big thanks for those links they are really informative. If I had the time and tools I would probably attempt but I think its better left to the pros for now. I found someone who will do it for $200 so I might go that way or I might just dig for the money to have TK do an overhaul. Hey kinda off the topic but I have heard that the 97 GTP has a different style transmission or electronics and the top end of the engine (valvetrain) is different is that true?

Thanks

Joe

Yeah, it's just the 97 GT's that had the different transmissions (4T60e's). The GTP's got the 4T65e's like all the following years.

I haven't driven one but have seen videos on Youtube that show them heating up sticky tires at the track. Does the car come standard with limited slip?

Unfortunately no, the 4T65eHD's came with a beefier differential, but didn't come with an LSD. Companies do make LSD's for them though.

i plan on putting in a LSD when i rebuild the trans.

it's the same one the K-cars use and if a chryaler FWD auto can survive with one it must be ok

I think it took like 6-8 hours total. But I had many distractions, and pulled it out and started back in one day and wrapped it up the next. BUT!! I had good tools at my disposal, and it's only the 3rd-4th time I have changed the trans in THIS car. So i have familiarity working for me in a big way. ( my dad is a retired mechanic, so i grew up around doing this sort of thing too. So i am sure I have an advantage there)

For a newb / rookie I would think with good instructions and some mechanical knowledge I would say a weekend SHOULD do the trick. ESP if you have good buddy's that could lend a hand.
