what type or brand of transmission oil cooler should i get for my 2004 GTP COMP G. also what type of oil temperatures should I expect with a cooler helping cool the oil? any info on coolers would be appreciated. I am having my transmission oil/filter changed on Friday and want to install a transmission oil cooler installed at the same time

Well if i were you i would go to the junkyard and get a cooler off a caddy deville or seville, they are easy to install and dont have to many issues.

In a sense, yes it will. Heat is the number one killer of transmissions, as im sure you probably already know. Also, the wekest link in our cars is the transmission so that only adds to the certainty of problems down the road. I would imagine that lower trans temps could result in a longer trans life and better protection during performance or spirited driving. But like Mikey said, it's really just overkill and the temps that you are seeing are normal. I believe 220 is when the fluid(oil) starts to burn up in the trans, and if it's getting that hot then you have bigger problems than just trans fluid. Nothing wrong with a lil piece of mind either, i suppose....go 4 it!

I would be part of the negative community on this one. No real reason for it. If you talk to the 3800 vendors, it is not typical for our transmissions to fail due to heat. We have a problem with the hard parts failing before anything else. Your temps seem normal to me. I would not fix what is not broken.

well i only have one because my radiator and trans was replaced and the connectors on my 05 trans were different so i had to use both radiator and aux cooler. and it seems like my car runs cooler than normal that way. but it is overkill lol

I'd say go for it. Because If you by pass it internal trans cooler in the cooling system. Then you remove the chance of the trans cooler bursting inside the rad and pumping fluid in the trans or coolant into the trans. And it will help drop engine temps a few degrees because your not pumping that hot trans fluid through the rad along with the coolant.

This link talks about the trans coolers. I had a GMPP one installed last year, and have had no issues at all. My friends at East Coast Transmissions install it. Check out page 2 for pictures of the installation.

I told by both my dealership and the shop that rebuilt my transmission the 2nd time to get a cooler. The reason I had it rebuilt the 2nd time was because my temps were getting up to 255*F. Taking it very easy on the 40 mile trip to work would get me around 220-230*F. My fluid was only moving at half the pressure so the gears were not getting enough lubricate to cool down. They found a bearing that was worn out that allowed the fluid to loose pressure.

I bought a cooler from PFYC.com but I haven't had time to install it yet. Hopefully this weekend.

Keep us posted on how the install goes. I'm planning on doing a trans service and shift kit prolly within the next month or so and I've been considering installing the same aux. cooler since my temps easily and regularly get up to 220 in the summer. I'm just curious how difficult it will be to install that cooler and I'd like to do everything all at once.

those are the normal operating temps you do not need a cooler unless you are going to tow a heavy load up a steep incline for a hour
