Alright, as some of you may know, I just recently bought a Hayden cooler for my transmission. I totally bypassed the stock radiator cooler for safety reasons (don't want coolant ruining my trans should the radiator fail)

Well from the drives around town these past few days I was alright with the results. Took a little longer to heat up, and was always 10* cooler than my coolant (180-190). Today I finally drove it for about an hour and a half to 2 hours. For the most part, the above held true. Then I noticed that it started to creep to 210* while my coolant was dropping to 170*

Keep in mind, it was 110* out today, so not sure what it'll be temp wise in cooler weather, but needless to say I am a bit dissapointed. Here I was looking to improve cooling (normally 180 max with stock cooler) and here i've worsened it.

Now, to my question. Is there anyone else that bypassed the radiator cooler? and if so, did you run a puller or pusher fan, secondary cooler, etc? Don't bother telling me to add the stock cooler back into the loop cause I refuse. Personally had to swap out some friends bad trans' because of a radiator failure

Why buy something sensible with a RWD setup when you can build something really stupid, like this

Coolant is regulated by a thermostat and also cooled by fans so its got 2 ways to help cool it. By eliminating the stock radiator cooler your elimination the cooler coolant to help keep the trans fluid cooler. The trans fluid and coolant are separated in 2 different areas. As a full time mechanic I've yet to see or hear of the 2 fluids mixing due to radiator failing. Not saying it hasn't or won't just the odds are a lot slimmer than that of your aftermarket one failing on you..

My advice hook it back up to stock. You said so yourself it ran cooler that way.

I have been a mechanic for 11 years and i have only seen that happen once. Hook your lines back up to the radiator, just the cooler alone wont keep it as cool as the radiator. The cooler is meant as added support to the radiator.

i dont agree with this..as i had a 99 ram and when i had my tranny replaced i eliminated the factory cooler and ran with just an aftermarket cooler (granted it was just a little smaller than my air condenser) and temps stayed lower than ever (even pulling 6,000 lbs trailer) i agree however that most aftermarket coolers are designed to "help" the factory cooler. (by typicly running in this order.. trans-fact cooler-aftermarket cooler-trans. but point that with a large quality cooler you can run with just that. and having a guage to keep an eye on things is always a good idea

I'm guessing the cooler he's running is not as big as the one ur talking about...running one the size your talking about I s practically the same size as a radiator. So all ur doing is seperating the fluids. A 5sq ft cooler will work much more efficiently then a 1sq ft cooler. There's more surface area allowing more air to flow to help cooler the temps. The jaywendland was making was the same point I made. Radiators rarely fail in the manner he's refering to so unless ur running a condenser sized cooler. Hook it back up to stock

Everyone I talk to in Arizona will normally bypass their radiator when the weather is that hot but in the winter time, it will take much longer to heat up. The radiator's in our cars do an insufficient job at keeping the trannies cool and the aux tranny cooler is definitely a better heat exchanger to run your tranny fluid through. Just make sure you are running a 160 tstat (this will definitely help) and get the PCM programmed to have your high speed fans come on at a lower temp. to help keep everything cooler. My average temps are right around 170 degrees with that setup and I have a tranny cooler that I will be installing for even cooler temps.
