Hello there,

I noticed that my 04 GTP tranny slipped when going from Reverse to Drive and I also noticed that when I am parked in my driveway (steep slope) and I go into reverse, I hear a clunk.

I had the tranny flushed 2 weeks ago, but the clunking was there way prior to that.

Any ideas what this could be ?

Also, what is the warranty on our transmissions?

Thanks!

If your car is parked at a downhill angle, and you go from P to R, you will hear a clunk..

The clunk on an incline is normal, theres a big service bulletin on that noise for all GM vehicles 1996+ been going on for years.

The Clunk noise is normally, The slip/grind between R and D is also commom but you should try to avoid it. The best way is to simply FEEL for the clutch to engage before giving it gas when switching between R and D. I will do it from time to time and just slap into drive and go but I always try to just wait a second and feel the clutch engage before I give it gas.

Once you do a rebuild of the trans with upgraded components, you will notice a big difference in both these common annoyances.

At what point in the life of the vehicle should I consider a rebuild vs. a failure then rebuild? :)

Thanks!

That can really vary depending on driving Habits, maintenance, Temps, and power, I have seen some 4t65e's last past 200k without rebuild also seen some fail at 40K.

But if you are looking into more power then a trans rebuild is normally a requirement because sooner or later you will need it, also upgrading the components to stronger, heat or chemically treated will allow you to get the full potential of the 4t65e.

Signs to look for when the trans is beginning to weaken,

higher temps beyond 230 F ( This is only under NORMAL driving conditions not hill or mountain driving ).

Slippage within the input clutch ( Normally the slip will last 3-4 seconds ).

Increased shift pressure pattern. ( The Shift pressures will be increased if any clutch band is slipping ( if not tuned with higher pressures ) - You will notice this as it will bang into gear )
NOTE: If the car was not tuned with increased shift pressures and is banging into gear, a rebuild is normally needed.

INFO: If you want to extended the life of the trans increased shift and clutch pressures are wonderful for this. Reason being - When the 4t65e clutch/gear bands engage they slide into place allowing slipping and wear also longer shift pattern. Increasing the pressures allows the gears to Bang into place which eliminates slippage and extends clutch/gear band life and better pull with shorter shift pattern. ONLY do this if the trans is in nominal working condition as this can also cause failure on a weak components.
