Has anyone tried to fit a derale 16 pass electra cool tranny cooler on there GP. I tried to install in the front but have a full side heat exchanger taking that spot. It does not fit in behind the front bumper on ether side even with the washer res removed. The only place that I found that it fits is underneith between the spare tire location and the rear bumper. Can there be any issues with running tranny lines from the front of the vehicle to the back?

I would advise against it. While the stock is bearly adequate, keep in mind that the fluid does need some heet, just not too much. Unless you flare and fit steel lines, I would not run them underneath my car.

I run over 280* of tranny temp. Steel lines are not a problem for me to run.

im a fan of trans coolers, but placement can be a PITA.

i have a IC with the FMHE, and i run a GM cooler. it all manages to fit rather nicely.

might just have to go with a smaller cooler to make it work.

I have had a GM transmission cooler installed on my GP for a while now and I have had no issues at all. And the nice thing is my temps are back down to a better range. Before I had the cooler installed normal driving I was seeing temps hitting 230-240. Sometimes up to 250, now I am back down to normal.

Here is the link to the thread that has pictures of mine being installed on page 2. trans-cooler-t3697.html

Hey, STKKS What part number is the GM cooler and How much did it cost to stalled it.?
Is the GM cooler for our cars or universal GM part.

I will have to look for you, I purchased it from PFYC and I can't find it on their website. Not sure if they carry it anymore. So I will have to look for the paperwork, but it was an actual GM transmission cooler. And I had a company called East Coast Transmission's do the actuall install. IIRC it was around $200.00/$250.00 for the install, but I also had them add new fluid and a new gasket also. But again not exactly sure would have to get the paperwork.

My original orperating temps used to be 230-240 and sometimes 250. Then I added the 180 t-stat and that helped to bring the temps down a bit. And then adding the cooler helped even more and again I have had no issues what so ever with the cooler, but I also had it professionally installed.

How are your guy's trans temps so high? The highest I have ever seen was 199-201*, and that was in the mountains of West Virginia doing 70+ mph on my way home from Wilmington, NC (450+ miles already driven, so everything was hot, trunk was full and I had 3 passegers with me).

At 280* I would expect things to start failing.

i douno. When waiting for the traffic lights, the temperature is very easy to head to 215*. BTW, i live in Vancouver, Canada. The outdoor temp is only 50-60* right now. I used 195* T before installed the trany cooler. Now i switch to 180. Everything works perfect now. However, i'd like to change the fan kick on temp to 185, but i douno how to do it.

My temps were getting high in the summer driving to and from work in the DC area with stop and go traffic. That's where I saw my temps going sky high. A lot of idle time in hot temps, it can take me on average over an hour to drive 15-20 miles sometimes in this area.

And watch out on Fridays in this area during the summer on 95 south bound ...... You don't even want to be on the road if you can avoid it. That is why my temps went through the roof, and why I started with a 180 t-stat. Then I was starting to auto-x so I wanted to prepare for that. Then, just last year I got a trailer to haul all my stuff to and from the events. So that will also be putting extra strain on my tranny, so better to be safe than sorry ........

280 is just crazy, and I would seem to think that you have another problem brewing that is causing so much heat.

I have never seen over 210 and it usually runs around 185 on my GP.

Laura, I can definitely understand your temps but 280* is crazy. There's got to be something else going on there.

By the way, I've never changed my trans fluid or filter, and I still average about 190* on trans temps. Maybe my new trans will run a little warmer? I don't know.

I agree 280* seems crazy, not sure how they are seeing such high temps. There must be something else going on. I also change my fluid and gaskets every 25,000 miles. And it has always been nice and clean with nothing in the fluid. Might be a little overkill to change it that frequently, but I had to do a rebuilt transmission on my old 1990 Sunbird. Don't want to on the GP, so I am a little more protective of her.

Once I get my race trans installed it's getting a filter/fluid change every 50K miles with Dexron VI :) Expensive, but in my opinion, worth it.

I saw 260* twice in my old 05. Once going up the Rocky Mountains, one going up a mountain pass in Utah or something, both with 3 people and a shit load of cargo. Engine temp was nearly in the red as well. I could just feel everything cooking, it was bad.

With my 04 I made sure that won't ever happen again, put a huge ass trans cooler on, biggest that Advanced carried. Now I can run multiple hard 100+ mph runs, with AC, cruise at 90+, and still hardly get over 200*

ok, living in northern maine we see temps range from -20f to 90f... just wondering if i should invest in a 180 tstat or a tranny cooler or both as my temps can hit 225+ on the very hot days pulling a small trailer... would the 180 cause problems in the very cold times?
