If you're driving really hard, I'd let it slide to about 215* or so. Much above that isn't good. When I was running mine, highway temps were around 190-200*.

I've seen 27x*. Was driving like a man possessed, and that's what it got to. Was in "safe" mode, not going in to 4th gear. I haven't ever seen that before, haven't seen in since, either.

I can't remember where I've seen it, but basically the addatives in a transmission fluid start burn off at around the 225-230* mark. I think the fluid itself starts to break down around the 250* mark and higher at an accelerated rate. I think I've heard someone say that transmission fluid life will drop to only hundreds of miles of life if operated at 300*F where it should normaly get you around 30,000 miles of life.

Mine is at 181 during cruising and never get's over 200. I have a tranny cooler in addition to my t-stat and lowered fan temps.

Mine stays a 179-181 while cruising and the most I have seen is 207 at the road track and 205 in the mountains.

Cooling mods are....
fresh dextron 6 every summer
180 stat

that is it.

iirc the magic number for "limp home" or "safe" mode for the GP's 4t65E trans is 24x*(two hundred fourty something)
