OK so i have been doing some looking and am not finding what I am wanting to know. And i can't remember.

I am getting a 3.1 gp and can't seem to determine if the trans is the same as a gt. I would like to use in my green car, and thought the 3800 had the same bolt pattern. But figured I could just ask easier than I was findng it on my own.

Thanks guys

One other thing, is it the same trans that would be in a 2000 malibu?

The 4T65-E is used with the N/A 3.1 & 3.8 and the 4T65E-HD is used with the supercharged 3.8 motor.

The 3800 series motors (unlike the earlier 3.8L motors that it was derived from) have the 60* bellhousing bolt pattern. The 4T60E was only used in 97 at least with the 3800s. The 4T65E was always used with the L67s in the GPs.

I put the wrong trans by mistake so I corrected it in my first post.

Keep in mind Don that 97 was the odd ball year that used the 4T60E in with the 3100 and 3800. I'm guessing the Malibu probably has the 4T60E if I had to guess. I could be wrong though.

The Malibu also uses the 4T65E like the N/A GP's.

So.... according to the service manual, a 2000 Malibu has a 4T40-E/4T45-E transmission. Other than that, I have no idea how to tell the 40 vs 45 apart unless they are like the 60 vs 65's and you can see a vacuum control thing. The 3.1 GP will have a 4T65E unless it's a bastard 97 like Drew mentioned.

and the SE 4t65 is the exact same as the GT 4t65 same gear ratio 3.29 unless it's from an impala with a 3100 or a centery or monte then it could be a 3.05

the 2000 malubu is on the epsilon chassis same as the grand am so it would be a 4t45. weaker trans

Tom, the Impala (and Monte from 2000+) never had the 3100. They had the 3400 instead as the base engine till 2005. Only Montes to have the 3100 were the 95-99.

wow, my phone must have gliched again when i posted (or tried to a couple days ago.)

thanks a bunch for the info guys, the se i picked up the motor is going in a friends malibu, and i figured if the trans was the same to just do the whole drivetrain. but insted it will go in the green car. to give overdrive back and usable.

Yah I just figured with 180k on their car if I could I would. But the se has about the same amount of miles as the motor so they will he close. Now I just have to get the plugs out of the gp so i can crank the oil out of the cylinders, add some oil to the crankcase, and fire it up to make sure it runs decent still, if all is good I will drive it around a little to make sure the transmission actually still works correctly before I just put it in the green car.
