Probably doesn't mean much to most of the people here, but I will share anyhow. As some of you know, I have an older gen GP, 78' to 88'. Its a six, but that six needs work to run again. I need to find a 301 Pontiac for this car to start with, and then I will upgrade to an LS3 later on. So, engine aside, I need a good strong transmission to back this project. There is a GM transmission sitting in the garage. I asked the man who knows what it is, well, what it is  Turns out, its a friggin TH400!! Hot damn, just what I was looking for! It either needs a rebuild, or is great for a core to get a rebuilt one. So the score stands at, Car+trans= halfway there. Just need that Pontiac mill, and to shorten the drive shaft.

I've had many 81-88 G body Grand Prix's, cool old car. I honestly don't see a 301 being worth the trouble, it was a choked out piece of shit smog motor. Look around for a suitable 350, their cheap and plentiful and easy to mod and maintain on a meager budget.

do not get a pont 301 it is a horrible engine  also check to make sure the trans has the BOP bolt pattern! i would get a olds 350 or 307 they are alot more reliable then the pont 301 and the car would beable to get out of it's own way ;-) just find an old cutlass from '78-88 and take the engine and mounts

I haven't looked around yet. This is a learning curve I'm on now. Never had a vehicle I could work on and mess up, and fix. Thank god for having a working car AND a project car. I didn't want to mess with motor mounts, but it is a good point that I could just snag the mounts out of the donor. I believe the TH400 Is out of a Cadillac.

the THM 400 might fit depends on the trans you have now. some stock THM350s had a longer tail shaft so they can be swaped for the THM 400 easaly.
