When I started up my car tonight to run errands, the transmission seemed very sluggish, almost like I was in a first gear, had to rev up to 2k rpm to even move
After driving for a while, everything seemed normal, but this has me really worried, any ideas?

-- Wed Dec 15, 2010 2:56 pm --

bumping with an update
Yesterday, it was below 20 out, and my car had been sitting for at least 12 hours
This morning I started it and ran it for 15 minutes to let it warm up, this seemed to help quite a bit and it drove normally

any ideas?

Transmission on the way out? Have you checked the fluid, etc? Maybe it's just a cold weather thing or electrical? Not really narrowing it down for ya am I?

I think its about that time of year when we can start throwing a "oh crap my transmission went out" party.

Seems like a lot of people have had transmission problems lately. Let us know what is up!

How many miles are on your car? Have you ever dropped the pan and changed the filter? This could help a lot. DO NOT do not do not get it flushed, but dropping the pan changes about 60-70% of the fluid.

Everyone in VA seems to be having their transmissions serviced this week

I explained the problem to my local mechanic, he said to drop the pan and changed the fluid and filter and he would look at it as soon as his schedule allowed, but didnt think it was an emergency

When I had the fluid and filter changed, they said the fluid was burnt and there were shavings in the pan

I have about 66K miles on my car, with an ATF fluid change about 6k ago and (allegedly) 15k before that
.
.
.
Also, for those of us still learning, why should I "DO NOT do not do not get it flushed"?

Coping from another forum:

Trans flushes are bad because if they loosen anything up, or move a piece of something to the wrong spot you can end up having to spend lots of money to tear the tranny down. Regular fluid and filter changes like every 50k will help keep your trans running quite well for the most part. I find that more then 50% of the time you run into problems after power flushing any trans, but to each there own.

But yeah, I've never heard good thing about trans flushes. They cause more harm than good generally, and to me, it's not worth the risk.

Makes a fair amount of sense

UPDATE 2

let it sit in a snowy parking lot for 6 hours and started it up, transmission seemed to be back to normal
.
.
.
but then my DIC and instrument panel said the my ABS and traction control were out

I disconnected my battery and checked fuses and relays, everything seemed alright, hooked everything back up, warning lights were gone and things seemed normal...

Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but, I just had my battery replaced

I am all out of ideas :(

What we learned in my auto trans class I took in october simply was this

The reason flushing a tranny with high mileage or even changing tranny fluid with really high mileage causes damage is because the fluid has micro-metals in it and after awhile those metals end up helping the trans stay together and if you flush all that out you start getting slipping clutches and such.

Honestly I would say at 60k miles you would be fine to flush a trans as long as its not been beaten to all hell. I personally only ever changed mine at around 60k when I put my shift kit in with a new filter.

The ABS and TRAC lights on are generally a sign on a bad wheel hub or bad wheel speed sensor.
