ok, i think im getting even more serious about this 5 speed swap again. this time im not gonna blow money on a whole car and just get lazy.

so heres the only options i know

getrag 282
getrag 284

and the F40 which is a 6 speed, and the only physical proof will hold up to an l67 as seen in Noahs GT. i got someone who can hunt down transmissions and put warranty on them all that jazz. but i want to know. which one WILL take the power of an l67, and if i wanted to build the motor as well along the line. mounting and fabbing is not a problem with this at all. theres a driveshaft company about 20 minutes away that is known for making custom CVs and what not.

was just reading that the 282 can only handle about 250 FT lbs of torque. is this true? i mean the fiero can have 400 small blocks slapped in them, then again idk what the torque is on that.

so help me out because my tranny is getting old and slipping a little more every day it seems. 160000 miles on that POS is catching up with it

the 282 can handle it

i rember there was a turbo 97-03 GP with a 282 swapped in it making over 400hp. guy did it in his apartment parking lot in a week

the F40 has been blowing up in fieros but the old getregs don't so take that as you will

If you want to fit a 282 (or 284?) to your L67 you will have to either find an oil filter adapter from a Reatta (good luck) or get one from Intense plus a remote filter kit ($$$.) I have heard tell there are other ways about it, but nobody seems to know WHAT those other ways are. The stock OFA will not clear the intermediate shaft.

The fiero getrags don;t have an intermediate shaft IIRC. I'll dig up a pic showing the issue with the FWD Getrag.

http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/49 ... ost1010357 This post shows how tight clearances are between the IS and the OFA. He is using a custom one, but IDK which one he is using.

Makes sense. I was told the fiero getrag wouldn't work, but nobody seemed to be able to say WHY it wouldn't work.

Aah my favorite subject with these cars. I want to see more than just 2 or 3 people do this. People spend much more on turbo setups and I think 5 or 6 speed would be much more enjoyable. One day I'll do it....I hope.

The 282 is weak, 250ft/lbs sounds about right. 20+ yr old trans. Could work... Tempting.

The 284 can handle modded L67s fine but good luck finding one. The clutches for 284 are like 3x the cost of normal ones. Gearing is set up for high revs.

The F40 is rated at 400 n/m, or about 295ft/lbs. Clearance issues with the subframe, about 1/4" too wide. Only a few years old so thats good.

IIRC, all torque ratings are validated for around 8 years of normal use. Of course they can handle more but lifespan will be shortened like everything else will.

And then again theres cryo-treating which will harden the internals and increase the torque capabilities.

How these work in Fieros is a whole other ballgame. They are mounted different, on a lighter car, etc.
