I understand that converting my automatic car to a manual would be a pain in the rear; however, I am curious if anyone has done this before? I can't seem to find any manual transmissions for my 04 Grand Prix GT2.

Any suggestions?

Guide to Converting GP to manual.
1) Sell GP since there is no manual transmission that will "just bolt on"
2) Buy car that came from factor with 3 pedals.

There's a very good reason you can't find a manual transmission... because there never was one for the GP since the pregens! Those who have done the swap use trans from cars like the G6 and then have to do custom work to get it to work the with flywheel, clutch, linkages, so on and so forth.

This has been pulled off before, but only by a small handful of people and IMO the total money dumped into those builds is just ridiculous. The final product is awesome nonetheless, but I'd rather save the headaches and just get a different car that already has the a manual.

Only problem with the g6 6 speed is that it can't even handle the power coming from the g6. I tore 2 apart in manual trans class and both had the 5th gear completely destroyed. You don't even make that much power in 5th!

But it would be a cool project none the less if you could build the crap out of the trans.

I feared this, but maybe it would be a nice project for another time.

There's a guy on grandprixfourms who got a getrag tranny on a turbo setup putting over 500whp. His user name kuntzi maybe you can get with him.

... 584whp in this vid with his 2nd gen and a 284.

284's(5-speed) can be had for around $1000, the rest of the swap isn't any harder than some of the other sht we do to our cars. IMO, well worth the bit of work.

The F40 will hold up fine. They're rated for MORE than our 4T65E-HD. (295 ft/lbs vs. 280 ft/lbs.) If you don't know how to drive a stick, then you're going to ruin it. Imagine what would happen to a ferrari tranny being driven by a 16 yr old...

Mr "Turbo 5-speed" Kuntzie also has an 04 GT2 6-speed(F40). It's been done. I've been researching it since mid-February. For $3k, you can get a 6-speed kit that you could bolt-in over a weekend. If I had the money, I would do this TOMORROW! Who knows, maybe next year you'll see a 6-speed GXP swap thread from me, lol. Don't let all the naysayers crush your dreams, driving a manual is so much fun, I even had a blast in my '90 sunbird with its 5-speed, even though it only has like 90HP.

Do it. Teach us. Inspire us.

I'm a naysayer and both of my cars are manuals
The OP doesn't have a couple grand to just blow on something like this, hell the car looks like it has a bent frame as it is. And doing something like a manual swap just fubares any resale value the car has left, not to mention cuts the potential buyer pool in half if not more.

Yes it can be done and has been done as I've said, but IMO it's not worth it at all. Take the money that you could have spent on a trans swap and go buy a real manual vehicle.

But that's just my .02 because I can't justify dumping money into something that has potential negative consequences if something is messed up during install, headaches, and rapes the value of the car. If he really wants 3 pedals and a stick, go get a sub-$1000 Honda Civic and have a ball and learn how to drive stick if he doesn't already.

Ok, you say nay, I say yea. Maybe we'll vote on it lol!

Personally, I'm not worried about resale, which I think would increase being such a rare car. I know I would pay more for one. My car is paid for so If I were to sell it now, $3k. If I spend $1500 on a 284 swap, I'll have one hell of a GP! If I were to put that towards another used car, plus the $3k, a manual car sure but a not a manual GP... And how much do people spend on suspension and rims alone? How much is a turbo?

To the OP, just weigh your options. I say read up on it, do your homework. Its you car, your choice.

Modding, especially heavy powertrain modding like a total manual trans swap or anything that isn't easily reversible= instant resale killer not rarity increaser, hence why people demod before selling. You, and other enthusiasts, may pay more, but you aren't the rest of the buying pool/dealerships.

I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer, I'm trying to be realistic especially for people like the OP who are still in school and have a job that doesn't pay a lot (no offense Raphial so please don't take it that way).

Yea, actually I agree with that point. Reliable transpo is a must for that. Finish school first and when you can afford it, do it!

Does that mean you're the angel on his shoulder and I'm that pitchfork guy? lol

After my tranny went out last year, I said f this automatic bs! It hasn't been practical until this year for me so yea, timing is part of it as well.

Haha, I totally get where you're coming from and I give you credit for having the balls to want to do the swap, just some people don't have the resources, know how, time, money etc to do it. Just don't want to see the OP try to swap and run out of money, break something, so on and then he's SOL cause he can't get to school or work.

lol OKAYY. Time to clear away some stuff.

I made this topic for future reference. There's no way in hell I'd do it now. I do intend on it in the future though.

I have a nice job now. Quite nice indeed. I just started a week ago at the Home Depot, with loads of benefits for my college funding, and things are going a LOT smoother here.

You are correct. The front frame of the car is shit right now, and needs dealing with. So does my rear passenger window motor, and my transmission. *shot* I know what my priorities are, I was just curious about a manual for the FUTURE. Not now, and not any time soon. Got too much on my plate right now to be going off buying too many extra parts for my car. I just want it running, and running good.

I understand the whole "wanting to be different" route if that's the road you're eventually wanting to take, but why dump a ton of money into converting the GP to a manual if not? You could just buy a car that's already standard shift and save the time/trouble/fabrication?

i would never pay more then book on a modded car i luagh whole haertefly when some one does

and you would be stupid to pay $1000 for a getreg 5 speed 284. you can find them for $500 easy and a full parts car for $800

for a $1000 it bette rbe factory fresh with a warrenty

Yes I did, but you obviously didn't read my post. You said absolutely nothing about why you want to swap a manual transmission in, I was asking because i was curious.

Damn shame there's not a FWD manual that could hold up to an LS4. That would be soooo much fun.

if the getreg can hold up to a 500+ turbi 3800 it would probably work with the ls4

If you get a manual, get a 282, not a 284. The 284's are rarer, more expensive, and parts are not available for them anymore so if you blow it up somehow it's done.

The 282 apparently has parts available so it can be rebuilt from what I was told. Not to mention it's cheaper from what I've seen.
