Ok I have owned my 1997 GTP for about 10 days now & this is what I'm noticing. The car has 176K miles on it & I already know the car is old, but I just want to make sure how much life I have until it's time to replace.

1) slow shift from 1-2
2) Under Hard accel trans goes up to 5750rpm & holds for about 2 seconds & shifts hard into 2nd (slippage?)
3) Sometime shudders when taking off from a stop
4) Very small jerk on shifts 2-3 & 3-4, does it intermittently though.
5) When shift form park into Reverse or Drive, it feels like the the car jumps or jerks.
6) Lastly it stopped doing it, but about a week ago. It felt like every time the car shifted (upshift or downshift) it felt like the transmission & engine was about to jump out the engine bay (ok maybe I put too much on that :D, but it felt like it was jumping up & down), it did it intermittently though. I also think that is due to a mount though.

Good thing is, that the tranny fluid is pink, not burnt, & full, and it has about 1000 miles on it since it was changed. It is also not throwing any trans codes (I dont think, does autozone scan tool find tranny codes).

So IDK, I know you guys know way more than me . But like I said, I just want to know how much time I have left before it time to get a new trans. I got a great deal on this car & its worth putting another trans into, If/When it goes out.

sounds like maybe a bad TCC. not a very easy DIY job, and to bring it to a tranny shop it would cost in the range of $500 to fix. you could try throwing a shift kit in from ZZP or your preffered site, and see if it fixes your problem. IMO it cant really hurt anymore than it already is.

Wow. This my second car with the exact same problem  . My 99 SHO did the exact same thing. How about I just put a bottle of stop-slip in the trans & start saving up for a new tranny. Would this be a good idea?

i would stay away from tranny additives. i suggest trying the shift kit. its really a cheap fix and usually works pretty well.

i had a bad TCC in my old GT. i put a shift kit in, and the tranny worked good as new for the 2 years i had it after. sold it to a buddy, and he still hasent had any problems

my GTX did the same thing. it was the TCC just watch ur tranny fluid like a hawk. there is a reason that car in is the garage. watch for code P0741 if you see that. bend over because ur gonna get it in the pooper. IMO its just cheaper to replace the trans with a junk yard trans beat the fcuker to shit. shit thats all my regal had.(Top swapped, S1X, Headers,3.25 pulley. close to 300WHP) and i beat on that bitch like a red headed stepchild.may she rest in peace it had a GT transmission so it had the 3.29 gears with a hard shift kit.

Yea I don't trust lucas in the tranny, but hey. The tranny is on it way out, & I'm just gonna drive it until the drive train falls off :). I am going to find a good trans with less than 50k miles or a rebuilt one & throw it on the car, they are some very cheap 4t65e-hd tranny out there in good shape. But, tell me more about the shift kits, Dont you have to pull the tranny to do a shift kit

nah, a shift kit took me not even 30 mins to complete. all you have to do is drop the pan, install a few spacers, put pan back on and fill with fluid.

Thank you guys so much for the help, I wish I was close to you guy so yall can do it for me :D. I am definitely going to look into a shift kit, but I am going to have someone install it, because it too damn cold in my garage right now to be messing with trannies. Don't get me wrong I love working on cars, hell I even do my own Trans F&F changes, but I'm not ready to be mess with the accumulators & stuff like that LOL & plus I don't even have the time to mess with it. So anyone in the chicago are know how to do shift kits LMK :D, Ill buy all the parts & fluid & ill drive to you.

Oh & also I found a good deal on a 4t65e-HD trans with 25k on it, but it's out of a Riviera. Willl that work

he's been out of work for a bit, so if you talk to him and give him a few bucks or a pizza and beer he may do it.

but he's the only one off the top of my head in or near chicago

also www.moradpartscompany.com for a new (to you) tranny

Yep the trans if Fcuked, I never noticed it but when I open the door up & put the car in gear, I heard what sounded like rocks rattling in the transmission & I also heard pump whine. So this trans is not even worth putting a shift-kit into. I'm just going to park the car for now & pick up a cheap tranny with low miles. I did find a 1999 Riviera Trans 4t653-hd Trans w/ a super low 25k miles on it. Will this work in the GTP or will I have to do some fabricating

that should work with the GTP. i use to have a Riviera before my regal. way back in the day. if you have to pull the tranny. keep looking for a different one. rivieras are the biggest PITA ever to work on

Trans is already out of the car & ready to be installed. So it should be a direct fit?

i would do some research before buying that tranny. I'm pretty sure a '99 will not work with a '97. I've been known to be wrong before though.

the 97 GTP trans is the same 4T65-HD as all the other 97-03 GP's

it's the 97 SE/GT that had the weird ass trans. it was a 4T60-E vacuum modulated

UPDATE ON MY TRANS:

Now I have a loud whine (& it not the supercharger :D). It sounds like its coming from directly under the airbox, right where the torque converter part of the trans is. So I am guessing the the TC pump is going out now? Also when I drove it today, it sounded like I had a bad misfire, but it sound normal at idle & the way it sounded, I was thinking my new cataytic converter wasn't on right.

So anyway of that, I found another good deals on trans.

1997 Regal GS Trans 99K, $125 (says in great shape) & I found a mechanic close to me that said he would put the trans in for $225 & he puts a warranty on his work. What you guys think about that.
I think thats a good deal on a trans install, because everyone else was trying to charge $350-$500 & he says that's is speciality.

yeah, all '97 SE's came with the 4t60e. early model 97 GT's all came with the 60's too. Some of the late model 97 GT's came with the 65. All GTP's had the 4t65e-hd

the Riviera tranny will probably work. hope you have someone that can flash the PCM for you. pretty sure thats gonna need to be done

UPDATE:
I guess the life of my trans was 2 weeks :(. Tranny blew up today. Lost all access to gears. Damn now I have to pay to get it towed to my mechanic lol.

So this 99 Riviera tranny w/ 25k on it. I got it for $200 bucks, but do I have to reflash the PCM. I looked it up & its the exact same trans MN7 & it has 2.93 gears. If I do have to flash the PCM how much does that cose

That slow shift on the 1/2 could be the PCS, too. The TCC solenoid won't affect the 1/2 upshift at all.

Yea I talked to the guy thats putting the trans in & he said it's a direct swap. Check this out though, he also had one of the fastest GTP in the midwest at one point. His name was Kevin Gurgland or something like that & his GTP was running in the mid 11s @ 136mph. So yea I trust him with my GP lol

I am getting my trans put in this weekend & I cannot wait it to get it back on the road. Oh & check this out, I got a 25k transmission for $100 & a modded xbox 360 (I knew my xbox repair business would come in handy one day :D). So I will have my car back on the road for $325 ($525 if you include shipping) , not a bad deal IMO
