While I was doing my brakes this weekend I noticed that my driver's side CV boot was torn. How much does this typically cost to replace?

I do not want to do it myself and I'm going back to school this weekend. Needless to say, money is an issue. I don't want to ruin anything though...

If there is any way to temporarily repair the boot, that would also be very helpful!

I think to the part to replace them is like 25$ or something.. Mine has been torn for a while as I don't have money to fix it.. it's at the top of my list of things to do when I get my school loan! I checked over how to do it a while back when I first noticed, didn't look too hard to fix.

I got one from monster parts online who is a vendor on here for $25. It cost me $170 to get it installed.

I want to make sure we are talking about the boot and not the whole axle. ZZP has the CV boot for $25, Autozone has them for $15. Anthony, you seem to have been ripped off for the part. I'm looking for labor costs really. I'd like to get this taken care of before the week is out...

The axle comes apart to replace the boot. You may as well replace the axle. The labour is less, and you get the whole part warranted. Once the boot is compromised, so is that joint. Speedee boots are worthless. An axle is $60 or so. Takes about an hour to do.

I just have a bad feeling about replacing the axle...I don't know what it is. And hour seems pretty short to replace an axle, are you sure that's all it should take? And how strongly to you recommend replacing the axle over just replacing the boot?

I completely understand why the axle is compromised, and I don't want to screw myself over in the long run, but I also don't want to overdo it and have a more complicated repair than it needs to be. I need this done fast and as painless as possible. I hate leaving my car in the hands of someone else too...but I don't have the time, space or knowledge to do this myself by Saturday...

All you do to replace the axle (this procedure will have to be done and LOTS more if you replace the boot) is to take the tire off, disconnect the lower ball joint, the outer tie rod end (most likely), and then jerk the axle out of the transmission. Installation is simply the reverse. You won't need an alignment since you won't loosen the outer tie rod end from the steering gear. Seating the inner joint in to the transmission is probably the hardest part about it all. I did one on an old Mazda in under an hour...my first time ever. It's not too bad, really.

That makes a bit more sense then.

What can you all tell me about ZZP's Stage 1 axles? They are only $90 and I know they'd get here quick.

No way in hell am I paying $300 for the axle. That's more than the labor to put it in! The axle may last, but apparently the boots don't!

Any information about ZZP axles or anywhere else I could get an axle that won't crap out on me for $90 or less.

I saw A1 Cardone has new axles and remanufactured axles for less than $70.

I need some Ideas fast

Come on, I'm not looking for this kind of commentary, I actually need some useful information for my situation, so I respectfully ask for you give me something I can use or not comment here at all. Thank you.

Napa sells new axles for under $70 for a lot of applications. Carquest does, too.

Jobber cost for a NAPA reman is like $43, and new is $74. I don't know what retail will be, but if you can manage to get wholesale, those prices should be in the ballpark. If you can't, reman will prolly be about $70.

I'm looking through Napa and Reman is $48 with $11 core, and new is $93. They have 1 reman in stock at the Napa down at school. Recommendations for either reman or new?

New is preferred. For that price, though, reman is an option.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I tentatively have a guy down at school with a hydraulic lift who can do it for me, and maybe I can help a little too.

Another alternative is Autozone.. No core charge, so you're able to keep your old axles (if need be)

I'm going to go with the motto "You get what you pay for" and go with the more expensive new axle at Napa.

Especially since I just sheared a Duralast socket adapter in half this weekend...I'm not sure I trust their axles with the amount of torque our engines put out. I know the manufacturing processes are different for sockets than axles, but like I said before, you get what you pay for.

Thanks though.

There's also a point where you have to draw the line.
