I have noticed that the trans seams to go into safe mode after the car has been sitting and running. I have tried fluid changes & new filter. Can engine temp cause this or simply fluid level? There is also a very unsettling grinding sound under acceleration. This happens more often than not,so my anxiety is running high. Thanks in advance for any opinions. Brian

Lucas is next to religion for both engine & trans. I'm trying everything before giving on to the re-build option.

In doing some research, can the accumulator pistons cause this? I have an article about boring the accumulator pin seats and replacing the pins, but would the gaskets of the pistions be the first and easiest thing to check? Most importantly, is this even possible from the bottom? I'm fairly adventurous in the garage, but removing engine/trans is more than I want to bite off by myself. Any advice, opinions, or jokes are greatly appreciated.

I had a Deville with a 4T60E that went out on me. It too was shifting hard and more so when it got hot. Took it to AAMCO and the technician said it was best to replace the entire unit. Said he's been working on transmissions/transaxles for 25 years and in his experience most 4T series trannies malfunction after a rebuild. The stupid warranty company was only going to pay for a rebuild. So he refused to service my ride. Well, after a rebuild, yep, it broke down again about 1.5 yrs later (25k miles). Had it totally replaced and never had a problem again. The new unit had a cooler too btw. So now I put one on any car I own. Hope that helps ya in your decision. BTW, like someone else said, try all the cheap options 1st!
