Hi all, I have an 05 comp g and I plan to autocross it regulaly this year. I don't beat on it out on the street but am very agressive when I'm dodging cones.

I'm going to switch from my all season tires to some very sticky tires that are a little bit shorter to help with gearing and I am concerned that the added stress is going to eat my tranny during this season.

Should I be worried?

My only mods are : Overkill pcm, front p-log and a cai.

I think if I nurse it off the start line I should be o.k. but I really don't want to put a new tranny in this thing.

Oh, it has just under 80k and I changed the filer and put in mobil one fluid in at 75k.

nick, im gonna tell you now....."durability" and 4t65e(our transmission) do NOT belong in the same sentence together. Our transmission are inherently weak, as Im sure you know, and when you start approaching the 300WHP mark, trans parts start breaking. It's not a matter of IF, but WHEN. So, that being said, I would highly recommend you consider beefing up the trans or buying a performance, aftermarket trans for your GP altogether. I know you said you don't reallly beat on it unless you're AutoX'ing, but for as much abuse as they're subjected to in just that lil amount of time....it will take its toll on your car eventually. And you already have 80K on the motor/trans anyway, so..... I would suggest being safe rather than sorry, but then again not everyone has $1000+ to blow on a new tranny. But it's better than being stuck at an AutoX event because your trans grenaded and then having to find a way to truck it back home

ZZP Transmission

Auto crossing the car with a pcm, front p-log and a cai isn't going to hurt the trans. Set the DIC for trans temp and if it gets to 220 degrees shut it down. The autocross courses are usually short in length, so I doubt that you trans will ever get that hot. If possible let it cool down between races and you'll be ok.

Thanks guy's,

I'm going to chance it and see what happens but I hope your right Don. Maybe I'll go ahead and start tucking back a little cash just in case though.

The highest temp I've seen was 233 but that was after two consecutive laps up the Dragon and I shut her down when I saw that, and changed the fluid not long after.

I can't wait to get some tires on this thing, hopefully I can close the gap on that pesky sti that keeps beating me.

Yeah I did them myself and they turned out really well but I cheeped out on the paint and shortly after the clear coat yellowed and began to check. I just got them stripped back down to original and there getting ready to go on the wife 99' gt.

i personally keep a spare set of axles shafts in our tow vehicle when ever i head out to Autox, since that is in my experience the weakest point.

as long as the trans has been well maintained you should have no issues, be easy on the hard launch, and watch for axles hop (WOT on rough pavement in a sweeper or skidpad can cause it). make sure you lock your cat into 1/2, or i guess tap shift it, i wouldnt drop back to first unless you know your dropping under 25mph, the strain on the tran isnt worth the time you potentially gain. and always let you car run until you drop back down to reasonable temps. Take the engine cover off before you run, and open the hood while your waiting in grid, if you happen to have yoru fans on switches turn those on as well.

and word of advice on autoxing these cars, drop your rear pressures a few lbs under your fronts, this should help balance the car out and keep tame some of the massive understeer inherent in the platform.

Im not sure how much Autox you do but a tranny cooler would be a good investment. The autox wont really hurt the trans but the Temp will. Your best bet in my opinion is to try to keep the trans temp under 190.
