I have an '04 GTP Comp G with about 75K miles. I've owned it for about 2 years....my brother owned it before me, bought it new.

Ever since I've had it, when it is cold outside (let's say ~40F or lower), when you first start it up and then shift into reverse, there is what I would call a brief "crunching sound". It isn't "bone-chilling" crunchy, but it doesn't sound like a normal noise either (we also have an '04 GT2 N/A and it has never made this noise).

Additionally, say when backing out of the driveway, after you put it into drive and move about 5-10ft forward, there is a brief, low "moan". I originally thought it was something in the steering (maybe related to the P/S pump), but I'm pretty convinced it's in the transmission. This moan only happens when you first move forward. It doesn't do it after that, unless the car has sat parked for a few hours, if not 24 hrs.

Does anyone have any idea what these noises might mean, and/or whether or not I should care too much about them? As I've said, since I've owned the car (2 yrs), it has done this. It doesn't make the reverse "crunch noise" when warm (either in warm weather at startup or in cold weather after the trans fluid is warm). And otherwise, as far as I can tell, the transmission shifts fine, even when liberally using the TAP shift. Oh, and I had the fluid changed probably around 65K miles....I don't know if it was changed before i owned it.

Thanks.

Additional information:

From my commute this morning, I noted the following:

After startup / warming for a few minutes, at a trans fluid temp of 42F, the "crunch" occurred. After driving and then re-shifting into reverse at stop signs/lights, the crunch also occurred at fluid temps of 60F and 72F. At 95F and 140F, it didn't occur. At times when the "crunch" did occur, there was also a notable "thunk" when shifting from reverse to neutral (but never into/out of drive).

Have the transmission checked electronically, could be that the valves are opening slower when the fluid is relatively cold and thick. Have you modified the car at all? What does your brother say about the noise?
