You can fix that if there is no hole in the case. I worked in auto salvage and I have repaired a ton of units that have broken cases. Tig weld them, Grind them down, And drill and tap them. Probably easier to buy a new tranny.

looks like the mounting hole ripped off the Diff cover.

diff covers are cheap and easy to fine i am preaty sure it's a 4t65-HD. should only take 1 hr. to fix and under $20 that includes the beer you drink wile fixing it (or your bevrage of choice)

well after he bought it he checked the fluid and was low 2.5 quarts of tranny fluid. filled it up one day before we left. came back the next morning and that 2.5 quarts was sitting on the floor lol. yeah its a decent size hole. its right above the threaded area

A brand new Diff cover is like $40 or so I think.. and changing the cover with the trans in the car.. is a PITA. Took me a whole weekend pretty much...

To me it looks like you should just be able to take off the diff cover.. then I would take out the differential, and check it to make sure none of the teeth are sheered off, and then just put a new diff cover back on. Make sure to get a diagram of the differential assembly, to make sure you put the sun gear and washers/spacers back on in the correct order!

Some parts I would NEVER go to a junk yard for.. especially when there's bearings and seals involved... (axle seal on the diff housing...)

i would buy one from teh scarp yard, and get a new axle seal from GM or something, either way it isn't super hard to change,
remove tire
remove ball joint
take axle out
remove four 13mm bolts holding extension housing
remove extension housing, *note* orientation of bearing
