A friend of mine has 17" wheels for sale that I'm interested in. The issue is that they are a 205/45 size tire, which is much shorter than my stock setup. I know this will mess up my speedometer readings if I were to buy the wheels and install them.

So here's my question: how hard is it to adjust the speedometer reading? I have a '96 SE sedan with a 4T...60E? if that helps. Can it be done electronically? Or would I have to mess with drive gears?

According to tire rack, a 96 GP Sedan has a stock tires size of 205/70R15, so if this what your running now and what your speedo was calibrated for, if you use 17" wheels you would need a 235/50R17 to be as close as possible (only 0.16% smaller in diameter difference), a 225/55R17 would come close second with 1.68% bigger in diameter difference.

With the 205/45R17, you have a 7.73% smaller diameter difference, when you roll 60mph on your speedo you will actually be rolling at 65mph with that size. You will get a bigger wheel gap and the ride will be harsher, I wouldn't recommend rolling with those, get a new set of tires to put on them

EDIT: I just noticed I never answered your original question, for this I will not be much help as I'm unsure if it can be done... :???: In my opinion, I wouldn't try to correct the speedo to compensate for smaller tires, I would correct the tire size to reflect the speedo calibrated tire size, or as close as possible.

Thanks for all the help guys. As it turns out, a friend of mine found out they were a perfect fit for his Shadow so he bought them. Problem solved. (well, kinda.) Just for shits though, I did mount one to my car and even with my sagging rear end and my 165-lbs self sitting on the corner, the gap was horrendous. I might do it again and take pics for the laugh factor (obviously I'm not driving around like that lol)
