Anyone know how to tell for sure what tranny is in the car?

If I go with the ZZP tranny, it costs extra if you don't already have an HD transmission. I've seen conflicting information. Some say that all the 04+ SC 3800's had HD transmissions. However, in another place it said only the Comp G's had the HD transmission.

If was supercharged from the factory, it will have the HD transmission. The Comp G has the HD with 3.29's.

you have a HD tranny but to check get the RPO codes off the trunk lid and post them up and we could tell ya.

there should be a thread z3r0 strated that list mostof the RPO codes for the GP

actually there is no "HD" tranny on the 04+ cars..all the differentials are the same IIRC...

yep, all 04+ trannies had some different hardened parts (parts not known to break anyhow, so kinda pointless)

So all 04+ transmissions could be considered "HD" comparing it to prior years?

No. The same applications still apply. Non supercharged engines get a 4T65E, and the supercharged cars get a 4T65E-HD.

That would be normal. You're supercharged. The Comp G got 3.29 gears instead of a regular GTPs 2.93 gears. Both are HD units, though.

i swear that i remember trannyman saying that there is no more HD differential in the 04+ cars. not saying there's not other differences, but theres no differential difference.

i could also be wrong though.

Well he and ZZP are charging 2 different prices for some reason. Something about a HD shaft on the passenger side...? IDK

I swear I remember reading in a post that there is something electronically different in the supercharged trannys. I don't recall exactly what......

So If I'm NA and want to go SC I have to put in a different transmission or have HD parts put in the existing one?

You can put a HD tranny on your car even if it started life as a non HD. The passenger side axle is shorter so depending on your situation you may need to also buy an axle.

The hd transmission was standard for the gtp. The only difference is the differential. The hd transmission is not required if you supercharge by replacing the top end on the standard block.

With the HD Diff Swap all you are swapping is the diff, Diff case, and passenger CV shaft ( its shorter to fit the longer HD case ). In truth the diff is not different only the SUN gears. You could swap out the SUN gears themselves and have a HD diff but the bearings are a PITA. Also switching to the 3.29 will add a extra shift.

Now the funny thing is with the 04+ is the diff internal housing is the same only the sun gears are changed. By changing the Outer Sun gears and internal sun gear you could do a HD Swap. The extended Diff case will still be needed as the 3.29 Internal Sun gear will add some extra length.

If you want my opinion on which one to use with a top swap - I would say the 2.93. With this you wont have the extra shift and you will have more pull during take off.

That GM Service Manual at the top of the page can solve an awful lot of confusion, especially since there's some fellas here that will give you your RPO list for free.

Give the man your VIN
Wait for RPO list
Go to Manual
Put in vehicle and year at the top
Unit Repair
Transmission/Transaxle
Automatic Transaxle
Specifications
The bottom 5 selections are RPO numbers. Pick the one that's in your RPO list, look under the correct engine RPO, then to Final Drive and see if it says HD or not.

True to that, you have a better chance of the diff or speed sensor on the diff failing then the case failing.
