I have a 99 Grand Prix GTP. 195,000mi. Recently the tranny stopped pulling all at once at traffic light. It appears the clutch broke appart in the TC and stopped up the filter. I found a used 4T65E non HD model 9CRB. I would like to rebuild my trans but I would like to run the used trans (9CRB) for a while until I can. Does anyone know if this is possible? I have found that fluid pressures are different in the HD and some valve body diff and possibly other differences. My plan was if possible to install my differential in the non HD and run it until I have mine rebuilt. Thanks

Yea, you'll just need a passenger side axle from a NON HD trans I believe if you don't swap convertors.

the diff will work. you may be able to find the differences on SI but you really need the 4T65E Operations Manual.

good luck with the rebuild. hope you can save the pump.

Are you talking about the ATSG service manual? I don't have it yet but was planning to order one. Hopefully there is not much damage. Everything appears to have happened very quickly and stopped up the filter. When I pulled the pan the fluid was fairly clean on top sediment in very bottom. Actually I was surprised that I didn't see more on the stick after seeing the bottom of the pan. I may be wrong but logically is would appear to me that the fluid was not pumped around much or enough to mix up the clutch material very much. There was some metal in the pan though hopefully only from the tcc and made its way to the pan without much damage.

I found the Service Manual. I tried to access it before but it was down. Going to check it out and see what I can find.

Here is an update in case anyone else may have the same idea. I ask Dave from TEP. He said that it will not work correctly. The biggest problem from what I gather is chain and sprocket ratio. I didn't think that it would be a problem as the speed output is read from the differential. I gather that the ECM will be using the RPM instead of the output which makes sense. I would have thought that the ECM could adjust betweem engine RPM and output though. From what I am told to make it work you would need the HD differential then the correct larger TC from an HD and change the sproket ratio or reprogram the ECM. Or just reprogram the ECM using the larger TC and of course use the standard longer axle if the diff is not changed. Its possible but not efficient. I guess I will just wait til the HD is ready. If I have anything wrong here please correct.

Is there any reason you wouldn't pick up a used HD trans?

Well I haven't located one but I did find a standard 4t65e relatively cheap. I really would rather rebuild mine but I wanted to install a used one temporarilly. Also it sounds like a good challenge now LOL! Its also hard to find one relatively low mileage also. At least thats been what I have found so far. I had read online that the only difference was the differential. That is why I started looking at this option to begin with. I have since found that this wasn't the case.

I will probably not use a standard now though. Probably just wait and rebuild.

Check with Morad Parts Company, they always have a few 4T65E-HD transmissions

It'll work fine, after making the necessary changes, depending on how much power you are running. I've heard mixed answers with exactly how much that is. 300hp seems to be the average, but I was running 250 with an already somewhat weak transmission and it wasn't doing well. That was on a top swapped car though.

I've heard that a non-HD wont last long in a vehicle equipped with a S/c...dont think i would personally take the chance...working on cars for a living, last thing i wanna do is do the same thing twice because i was being cheap...
