Hey everyone. As most of you know my GF has a 97 GT, but upon searching the interwebz it seems as though the 97 eventually got the 4T65 in place of the vacuum controlled 4T60. So... what's an easy way to tell the 2 trans apart? Yeah, I know dumb question but I've never actually spent the time to look at the 2 and see what's different and it's been bothering me for quite a while now, especially since most of the places I read say that the trans got changed in the middle of the year or 97 (not sure how true that actually is though) and the car is made in June, right in the middle of the year, so that didn't help. I'm fairly positive she does have the 4T60, but I'm just curious.

Also how the heck does the 4T60 actually use vacuum to change gears?

This may sound stupid, but on some 4T60Es I've seen the code 4T60E stamped into the transmission pan. It's worth a shot...

Haha, I'll have to check that out. When I was doing exhaust work last weekend I noticed a part number or something on the back of the trans casing right in front of the sway bar, but it didn't say what trans it was and I forgot to write the number down and look it up. Thanks for the input Mike.

NP. My Cutlass had the numbers in raised print about two inches tall, so if it's there you aren't gonna miss it.

Also, on the front of the 4T60E is a vacuum modulator that the 4T65 series transmissions doesn't have. The vacuum on the 4T60E is mainly for line pressures and what not.

Awesome, thanks everyone. I'm not sure if I want to venture onto that site or not, haha.

So my next question is... can you swap the 4T65 in place of the 4T60? I'm sure if it were possible it would be comlicated, pcm work, electronics crap, different throttle body I believe since I think the vacuum line is run off it perhaps, and so on and so forth, but is it actually physically possible to do it? I have no intention of attempting, just out of curiousity so down the road if her trans ever decides to just blow up.
