Can you swap a 4T60 with a 6T75 in a 2007 Grand Prix?

-- Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:01 pm --

To get everyone on the same page, do you want to swap your 4T65 with a 6T75? If so, why?

I understood it as he put 4T60 instead of 4t65, but regardless, wants to put in a 6T75 aka GM-Ford's six speed auto which replaced the 4Txx transmissions.

Yes the 6T75 replaced the 4T65.

-- Tue Dec 20, 2011 9:52 pm --

I was just more interested in a 6speed.

My car has the 4T65-E. I was thinkin a 6speed auto would make my car a bit quicker.

The time and money required in doing that swap could better be spent at actually making the car more powerful and not just making it change it's power delivery to the wheels. There's also cheaper alternatives to trans swaps like going from your stock 3.05 gearing to 3.29's.

oh okay i get it now. If the 6t75 works for our cars why do people use getrag 242's for 6 speed swaps?

Those Getrag's are manuals, the 6T75 is a 6 speed automatic.

Got it. So my car has a power band from 4000 to 5800 rpms, so by having a 4 speed transmission it stays in the power band longer than it would with a 6 speed. But on the other hand it would hit the power band more times with a 6 speed, so what would be better? Just curious to know. If i was gunna swap tranny's i sure as hell wouldnt put an auto back in

My thoughts exactly.

Okay i wont do it. But if i get to a point where my car gets enough power for more gears on the speedway that would be one of my choices.

the 6 speed is not any better it just has 2 overdrives insead of 1 the other 4 gears also are not set up for the 3800s powerband but that of the 3x00 seriese (ie 3100, 3400, 3500, and the 3900) so it will not accelorate any fast then it does now in fact the car might be slower becuase it will be so far out of where it needs to be becuase the 3x00 rev higher so there gear slits are set up for this an the 3800 will only have a couple hunder RPM of it's power band beofre the trans shifts and dumps it out of it's power so it would feel slugish and slow

more does not always equal better

Bingo! And also what Cannon said, keep the rpms in the powerband instead of burning through it in no time at all and then into the next gear to just blow through the powerband again.

Go watch youtube vidoes of a legitimately powerful 3800's and watch the speedo climb fast as the RPM's stay within the powerband and not keep changing gears.

More power doesn't require more gears because tranmissions = engine torque multipliers but the 6T75 is focused more on MPG's with it's additional OD's as Tom said, so it won't even help you with going faster since 2 gears are pointless for accelerating and the other 4 just neglect the powerband. Stick with your stock trans and change to 3.29's or even 3.69's (if you hate DDing your car but just want a track queen) and put the rest of the money into power mods.

I dont only want to make my car fast i want to make it better(like a super sedan). I like my Grand Prix, my goal is to make better and faster than a G8, thats it.

Automatic transmissions can also be tweaked by adjusting the torque management settings in the PCM. Something that would be worth looking into.

also getting an aftermarket torque conveeter with a higher stall speed will help

and sorry to burst your bubble but even though in a straight line you might beable to beat a stock v8 G8 you will never get a GP to beat one in the twisties or on a track

the GTX had every GP chassis part and even though it handled amazing for a GP it sucked ass still. the merc with the stock interceptor suspention out handles it and i can not touch a stock G8

^^x2. The amount of money it would take to get a GP on a G8's level would be as much if not more than just selling the GP and buying a V8 G8. It would drive the correct wheels, have 2 more cylinders, better chassis design, and can be had with 3 pedals, all things the GP doesn't have.

Having a 6 speed is for cars with a lot of torque and power. Having only ~200HP with a 6 speed transmission would be a b!tch to drive, and you would be slower at red light races because it would only take longer to jump to the higher gears. Getting a 6 speed will only stretch out the small power you have so much that it would become a crutch rather than a benefit.
