Ok. I have an 04 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, and I've had it for about a year now (From last February), from buying it used. Since then, I've had numerous problems. Most of the radiator and the very bottom of the engine block was supposedly corroded pretty bad, especially the radiator. Apparently it corroded over so bad, half of the radiator was unused, and the car ran hot for months until I paid about $1,300 to fix it in a shop (I really think I was kinda ripped off though.) After that, the starter shorted out, and also screwed up the battery, and the battery posts (I don't know how everything else electric-wise was salvaged and workable later though). So I then, myself, had to replace the starter with a Grand Am starter since that's all I could get at the time...and I got a new battery, and replaced the old rotten battery posts with new ones (Along with some appearance work and such, including touching up the rims and repainting the stock rims back; they look awesome). Well, now my tranny is acting like it's trying to blow out on me (Not literally). For the past few months, it has been sliding and sticking like crazy on the (D)rive "gear", and now it's getting so bad that every time I stop at a red light, it sticks for literally about 5 seconds until it shifts violently then finally goes. I've been driving it in 3rd gear lately to see if there would be any change, and the tranny doesn't stick as much, and doesn't shift as violently half the time it normally does.

My point in posting this is I am in need of a new transmission, no doubt. However, I have never worked on a transmission in my life, and what little knowledge I do know won't get me far. Does anyone know of a good automatic tranny for sale somewhere for a good price? I'm on a low budget at the moment (Thank you college; stingy b-stards lol). Any advice? Suggestions? Thanks~

That right there is a clear indication that you got screwed. Bottom of the "engine block" doesn't even have coolant running through it, just oil.

Also not sure how a radiator "corrodes" since it's just aluminum fins with some pipes running through them and most of the radiators casing on the GP is plastic which obviously can't corrode or rust. Moral of the story, tell that shop to go F themselves.

As for the transmission... Morad Parts Company could hook you up with a used trans. I have no idea about replacing it though. I just know that the entire cradle/subframe has to be dropped.

I thought this too, but they "explained" to me (Man I hate those guys.) that it is still okay to use though, and it wasn't as bad as it sounded. I wanted to punch the guy in frustration...sadly he's the only mechanic in my town besides one other guys who is even worse. I haven't had any problems lately out of the engine block itself though, nor the oil system.

I was thinking this too actually...but the guy explained, and I quote again, that he couldn't put any water through it with even the highest pressure to flush it out.

I'd love to put the thing together myself...but I don't have the proper equipment to drop a tranny, and put a new one in.

Now would be a great time to get a performance tranny if you plan on modifying your car. You can get one from ZZPerformance or tranny man (whom I don't have a link right now, I'll post it later). I've been quoted like $500 for a new tranny install, dong know in your area

I'm a little bit confused here. $500 tranny AND installation? Say what? And that link you sent me is crap. I can't tell what's what on that website. Whoever the web designer is needs a boot.

Where are you located? Its not to hard to drop your trans but only do it if you have someone to help you and think you have the experience to do it. I just dropped mine due to a cracked flex plate.

Dave from Tripple Edge Performance is by far the best person you could have build your transmission.

I live in Albuquerque, NM. I'd prefer to meet someone rather than getting it online, if I can.

If all else fails, http://www.moradpartscompany.com/
I can pop in and talk with them about getting you 04+ 4T65 non-HD.

You a member of clubGPee? There seems to be a ton of demods going on over there and I'm sure someone is selling a trans.

Nah I just moved here a few months ago. Was living in Louisiana (Go Saints!). I was not aware of this club...do you know much about them?

ClubGP is a national club (like GPONA but with more drama) but their for sale thread is always blowing up with stuff from people all over the country.

I my humble opinion, stay away from clubgp unless you're buying or selling, not worth all the drama bullshit.

Yeppers, I haven't joined that place for a reason, but I do troll the F/S threads just in case. And if there is every something I find I want, I'll just have Kyle get a hold of the member.

Lol, I guess you've never removed a knock sensor or replaced a leaking freeze out plug yet, that's probably what the guy was talking about. Just a guess on my part. Aluminum radiators can and will corrode if improperly maintained. They also get plugged up with mineral and lime deposits over time if you use tap water to activate the coolant, instead of distilled or demineralized water.

150,000 miles and 13 years in the salt belt and my knock sensors and the coolant passage ways they go into were great  As for freeze plugs... okay ya got me. I've never touched mine, so I don't know. However, I see you're point and would totally think that that is what the OP meant by "bottom of block". I'm just still at a WTF $1300 moment. but if a cooling system was abused that bad, imagine what else could be ready to go...

I was just going on the assumption that the car still had factory filled dexcool in it so it should at least be demineralized. In the past 7 years now, the only thing my 04 ever had a problem with cooling wise is a Tstat.

Well the guy who had it before me was a dipshit. Like, really. He really screwed up the car. He had it also sitting in his yard in the grass for two years, never running it period. >.> I want to punch the shiz out of him next time I see the dope. So, I honestly am not surprised the thing corroded over. Problem is, it was sitting in Louisiana. One of the most humid spots in the US. No wonder it has problems, that and he wrecked it and the radiator was damaged before he sold it to the dealership my mother bought it from. v.v" If she would have loaned me $500, I would have gotten a silver '07 GTP WITH a moon-roof in perfect condition...but no. Even though she's getting my little sister a brand new 2010 F150 right after she got expelled for drugs. </rant>

So... based on that knowledge.... WHY THE HELL DID YOU (or your mother in this case) BUY IT!?!?!?!?!?! I mean that with utmost respect.

Man this is my mother we're talking about. Most gullible woman on the planet. She bought it...not me. >.> If I'd known, I'd definitely stepped in some how or in some way. Just tired of this BS. Had to stop my car today because I just got back from Jiffy Lube and the dumb asses put almost 6 L ins my 4.5 L tank. x.x Oil spewed out of the dipstick tube and all over the front of the engine block. Thought my car was smoking, but it was actually just from the oil coming into contact with the engine block. Man am I pissed. Tomorrow I'll have to drain some of the oil out and hope nothing was damaged.
