i know nothing about what wheels fit 97-03 lol, will a 17x7 with a 40mm offset fit ok?

That offset will work fine. Make sure the bolt pattern is correct. As stated the factory bolt pattern is 5x115mm but we can use a 5x114.3mm.

yeah, it will work with correct bolt pattner. Those are just some narrow wheels
