Just curious what would cause a warped rotor? I was in the shop a few weeks ago and while my car was on the lift, I spun my rear tires and I could see and hear that on both left and right brake pads touched the rotors as the wheel spun. It was like the rotors were warped and that only certain parts of the rotors touched the pads.

Is this normal?

well.....I have an answer....I was told it is normal.

The pads are always in contact with the rotor (or at least they should be) so there will be a slight dragging sound. As long as they spin freely you're good. To answer you original question. warped rotors can be caused by a lot of things, but low quality rotors/pads, heat, and excessively hard braking are good places to start thinking about what went wrong.

Yeah, it's normal. Kyle's list of what causes it prett much covers it but one more thing is warped rotors can also be caused by lots of hard breaking, as mentioned, followed no cool down light breaking (look at really high end cars or race cars and they have 2 or 3 piece rotors which don't require "cool down" cycles and disipate heat quicker). Some of the guys that go to road courses mess up their rotors that way becuase they go around the track beating the crap out of the brakes, and then just park the car immediately afterwards instead of driving around for a little while and just pressing the brakes lightly to let the rotors cool down slowly and evenly so the rotors will warp due to uneven cooling/contraction. Same goes for spraying water/washing your car after hard braking.

Ahh thank you all for the info. I would not consider myself to be a "hard braker" , but that is not what my wife would say! She thinks I drive too fast and brake too suddenly. Hardly racing type stuff :)
