Hey there,

I have Yokohama YK520 V-rated tires on my 04 GTP, and I think are rather loud with road noise. Are there any performance tires that are are on the quieter side? I am using stock rim size and I may go to an 18" tire sometime and am curious!

Thanks.

I don't know any good performance tires off hand that are super quite since the way performance tires are made make them inherently noisey to a point. However, I can tell you that goign to an 18 inch wheel is only going to make road noise worse since the sidewalls will shorter and usually a little stiffer. Quite tires = touring tires. But then again what do I know. I don't have an any mufflers on my car so road noise means nothing to me.

How do you like those tires though outside of noise? I'm looking into new tires for my 04 GP.

First check to make sure your tires are wearing evenly. the grand prix has an independent rear suspension so all four wheels can be aligned. It seems like the rear tend to come out of alignment rather easy. a bad alignment will cause the tires to wear unevenly and increase road noise, which will not always cause a noticeable vibration. what usually causes noise in a tire are wide sipes or gaps in the tread. usually tires with tread that are more solid around the tire are quieter. However usually a more solid tread means less water evactuation and worse snow traction. circumferential grooves shouldn't make too much of a difference with road noise but they will make a big difference with hydroplaning. Like planeboy said, a smaller sidewall will transfer road noise more than larger sidewall tires. If you go to a 18 I'd recommend a 245/45r18. They're a wider tire so you'll get better contact with the road but the overall diameter of the tire will be the same as the stock 225/55r17 or 225/60r16. This will make sure your speedometer and ABS aren't affected.

The are decent tires with a good all around seasonal tread. I had these in Michigan and they handled snow very well and they do well on wet roads. I pushed them to the limit on dry roads and they can squeal a bit. Like I said, I think they are a bit noisy, but maybe I am getting older and less tolerant. LOL

I am in NC now was considering more aggressive performance tires.

Ever since I installed the UMI RTAs and frt and rear STBs I seem to have more road noise so perhaps I do need an alignment??

I use these tires in 18's and have no complaints.

I'll have to look into those tires then.

The front and rear STB's won't do anything to your alignment but those trailing arms might have changed things in the back end alignment. As CLIS mentioned, check how the tires are wearing and see if anythings unusual. Alignments are always a good thing to get just in case something is off. Also, don't forget to check the tire pressue. I know, it's an elementary thing, but just checking all the bases.

Make sure you rotate your tires often, if you don't they will wear unevenly and get noisy.

I put Yokohama AVID ENVigor tires on my GXP this year and I love them. They are super quiet and stick to the road real good. They are suppose to be pretty good in the snow too, but I'll have to see how they are this winter. I'd buy them again.

Thanks for the tip. It would be an interesting survey to find out what everyone is riding on and get their thoughts on traction, noise, etc....

I may just start one up if I could figure out how.. :)
