Did some searching, and I came up with 245 being the widest you can run. Do you have all 4 wheels being 18X7 or 2 18X8's and 2 18X7's?

Yeah, I did some more searching and found that too. In all honesty I'd say go for it. It shouldn't be too much tire poke past the wheel lip.

A wider contact patch doesn't necessarily mean more traction...it also depends on tire compound. A sticky 235 will hook better than an all-season 255 generally, because the wider tire allows the weight that the tire is bearing to be distributed over more surface area of the road, which would result in less grip because you have less weight per square inch than before.
