Good day !

I had my first opportunity to take my car on the Interstate this afternoon after having the front sway bar links installed. When driving over 60, I am experiencing some vibration at the steering wheel and I definitely can feel it under my feet. What would cause this?

The car was just aligned back in Oct.

Perhaps this could be a tire balance issue? Or perhaps I am feeling the uneven tread wear since my alignment was out for a while.

Any thoughts?

Uneven treadwear and an off-balance wheel can cause this issue. So can warped brake rotors though. Does it get worse (the pulsating) under heavy braking?

I went to Discount Tire and had my tires balanced and it seemed to help. I was able to go 80mph down I-85 and no real significant vibration :) It did not occur during braking at all. My left rear is worn more than the rest of them since the rest have been replaced due to damage or defect. I was thinking they were going to try to sell me a tire to replace that one....Ha! I would have said that I will be purchasing 18" rims and tires next year so be patient :)

Good deal. Probably just off balance some. Wheel weights could have fallen off or something.

UPDATE::

I drove to VA and back over the holidays in my car and the issue still exists...even after having all the wheels balanced. I still feel a vibration at the wheel slightly and on the floor from 55 - 70 mph. After 70, I really do not feel it.

The only thing that changed prior to this was the new Moog Front End Links and I had no vibration issues prior to that. I drove to VA for Thanksgiving and all was smooth.

What would cause this?? Maybe I increased the sensitivity of the suspension now I can feel all the tire/wheel imperfections? This sucks.

If the tires are slightly out of round you'll get vibration even though they are balanced. Worn tie rods will also cause vibration. I had that problem with my Grand Prix and when I replaced them it went away.

Thanks Don.

I am thinking that my tires could be the issue since when I replaced the steering gear, I replaced the front tie rod ends and had an alignment. I have had so many issues with these Yokohama YK tires that the left rear is the only tire that is orgiinal after I upgraded wheels and tires 3 year ago. I had 3 tires replaced under warranty....

Any suggestions for good high performance all season....long lasting...40K tires? :)

I have the Goodyear Eagle GT's on my G8 and I love them. They are smooth as glass at triple digit speeds and quiet too, even after 15,000 miles. They have great dry & wet traction and work good in the snow. It looks like I'll get about 30,000 miles out of them, which is good for an ultra high performance tire on a 400hp car. There is no such thing as a long lasting performance tire, if you want good traction you have to sacrifice how long they will last.

Don's got it right with that. A good performance tire is sticky and soft. I good high mileage tire is slick and hard (waits for sexual innuendo to be made). You have to find the right balance between those two. I've always had good luck with Eagle F1 series tires, Some people hate them. Read reviews on tirerack and on the forums, and as long as you don't buy cheap tires you'll probably be pretty happy with your choice.

Where do you live? They aren't much for a high performance summer tire, but a lot of people like Goodyear Tripletreads, as they provide good dry, wet, and snow/ice traction and have a 80,000 mile warranty.

Im am not a fan of Goodyear but thats just my personal preference. Guys on hear talk highly of the Eagle GT tires that Don is talking about and its making me curious. The one brand tire I have had in the past is Sumitomo. Now they may sound like a cheap tire but these tires are good IMO. Had them for about a year and a half on my S10 which was a 4.3v6 with a 5speed in it and I was not gentle on them and drove the truck year round and they surprisingly well. No snow issues with turning braking or traction(had bags in the back obviously) but never once did I get stuck and during the summer time they performed like champs and were quiet and rode well. I have been looking the Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 and have good reviews and at 80 bucks a pop on tirerack with a 65,000 treadlife warranty I think I will pick these for my next set.

I was never a fan of Goodyear tires either until I read about the new Eagle GT's and decided to give them a try. They are 10x better than the RS-A's or the LS tires, and are right up there with the F1 tires Kyle mentioned, which were recently improved after the success of the Eagle GT's.

Sumitomo makes good tires that are very affordable. I don't recall anyone complaining about them, so they would be a good choice for someone on a limited budget. I would rate them being similar to Kumho tires, which are also really good considering their lower price.

Update:

I took my car to my local Chevy dealer to look at the vehicle and they performed a road force balance and all is great! I imagine the 6 weights in a row that Discount Tire put on one of my wheels did not help. I always wondered why Discount Tire did not do road force balancing because it seems from an engineer's perspective that would give you the best results!

also.....I have read that Yokohama's are hard to balance! Wont be be buying them again!

So now that the vibration issue is resolved....I can resume my figuring out what comes next....headers..or 18" rims and tires? :)
