Good day,

Many of you have read my woes with having a vibration in the forward portion of the vehicle that I could feel under me and also slightly at the steering wheel. When I had my LIM and valve gaskets replaced last week I mentioned this to the shop and they took a look at it. When I got the car back they said that they filled the tires with nitrogen since they could not determine any other mechanical issue, and that helped solve the issue.

Well, after having driven the car for a few days now, I am telling you that it works! The vibration is not noticeable now.

Does anyone know why this would work?

nitogen offers a more uniform volume? magic? or is it all in my imagination? :)

Thanks.

I know physics!!!!! Or at least my transcript says I do.
The reason nitrogen is used (you can notice cars filled with nitrogen because they have green valve stem covers) for a couple reasons. The main reason is that the nitrogen molecule is larger than an oxygen molecule, therefore, the tire will lose less air over time due to the nitrogen molecules being unable to fit through the small little pores and such that rubber, the bead, metal have. Also, nitrogen has better temperature qualities than regular "air". When it is heated, it expands less (hence why you're supposed to take tire pressure when the tires are cold), therefore the change in PSI is usually less with nitrogen, hence why many race cars are filled with nitrogen instead of atmospheric air because a 1 PSI change for them could mean 1st and second especially in F1.

Other than that, I have no idea.

I knew it had something to do with magic frickin Unicorns! :) bless them!

Anyway - thank for the physics Matt. But what I still do not understand is why this helped reduce the vibration? My only guess is that there is an issue with one or more of my tires which caused the vibration and perhaps over time one tire lost air and then the vibration started.

Now with the nitrogen, that loss of air is less likely and has not occured. Or maybe I have a bent rim and now with the nitrogen the loss of air is less over time?

Thanks

I doubt the nitrogen stopped any shaking.....Maybe you had a loose lug nut

I agree with you, but it may be masking another tire issue.

I wish those magic unicorns would fix my alterator! :)
