I have a rattle in the front end that will not happen when the brakes are applied. Calipers are tight. It isn't very loud, just a light metal on metal clanking noise. I've recently refreshed the front end, hoping it would go away (140K anyways so it was due) new quick struts (all bolts are tight), Dorman Control Arms/Balljoints, Engine mount, Dorman sway and all bushings replaced. I've had the car up on stands and tried wiggling things around but cannot replicate the noise. I hear it when the windows are down and I'm going about 10 mph. They recently put in some new pipes on my street and they didn't pave it totally smooth so anytime i hit those bumps I hear it. I haven't replaced the tie rods, they have a tiny amount of play and I'll be doing those in a week or so but I cant see that causing any noise, right? I'm stumped on where to go next

Check that the brake pads are seated properly. My Volvo did this when the pads wore.

I'll check it out. I did them about 9K ago but anythings possible. On another note when I hear the noise I can feel it thru the steering wheel slightly.

What do you feel in the steering wheel?

If you feel it in the steering wheel more than likely it's the tie rods. Or it could be the struts and/or strut mounts.

But, that wouldn't go away under braking, more than likely, it would be aggravated by braking.

When the brakes are applied it preloads the suspension part that's worn which stops the rattle.
