I just bought an 06 Grand Prix GT with 50k on the clock. Been looking for one with this setup for awhile now and found one that had it all so here I sit much more in debt.

I just purchased a set of Don's STB mounts and GM Bars and can't wait to get those on to help stiffen up the chassis and hopefully stop the squeaks and rattles from starting.

The two questions I have are is that there is a clunk/knock in the front end of the car. It seems to happen as I come to a stop and then take off again. Or from a drive to reverse. It definitely seems more pronounced if steering is involved and i can feel it through the wheel. It doesn't seem like its really loose, but there is a definite clunk/knock in there. It also doesn't necessarily seem to associated with bumps either, just seems to happen/be more noticeable at slow speeds

Before I bought it I jacked it up and tried moving the wheels side to side and their didn't seem to be in any real play in there so I'm guessing it is not the tie rod ends but you guys would know better then me.

The other question I have is I read that at 50k you should change the supercharger oil. Have looked around but haven't really found any info on this and was curious if someone had any insight into this.

There seems to be alot of knowledgeable people hear and I greatly appreciate your help looking into this.

Thanks,
Joe

Hey, Joe. I'm Joe, too.

Sounds like a mount or something might be messed up. Sway bar links might do that, too. The supercharger oil doesn't have an official change interval. But, it's still not a bad idea at all to do it...if you can stand the smell!

The more I've been looking around and seeing what other people are saying it seems like possibly a strut mount might be the issue. Anyone have any ideas, thoughts?

Also I was wondering if anyone has an idea of where to get a chilton's/hayes manual for the 06 GP. I can't find one for the newer models only through the 03's

Is it only when you turn the wheel? Or only when straight or accelerating?

I had a shot strut bearing, make a LOUD POP everytime I'd turn the wheel...........Actually drove it like that for a year before I just changed it this summer....Hahah

Check your calipers, make sure they're bolted on properly.
Check your lug nut torque - if it's not up to 100 ftlbs, get it there.
Check for any play in your wheel bearings.
Check to make sure your axles aren't going bad.
Visually inspect your tie rod ends (inner and outer) to verify no movement when the wheel is moved.
Strut mounts and ball joints.

I'm betting on #1 or #4 though, since those seem to be most common.

I've noticed the sound can easily be recreated by turning the wheel 180 degrees back and forth while going 5 MPH or so.

I jacked it up today and looked underneath and the Tie Rod ends, both in and out look good with no play. The Strut are solid and don't wobble at all, same with the sway bar end links. CV joints look good, spun the wheels and the boots are in great shape, no tears or cracks. The wheels bearings seem good, no play in the wheels at all when pulling pushing on them.

I'm thinking it might be the intermediate steering shaft. I bought a lube kit from GM and going to try that lil bastard tomorrow night after work and see what happens. I'm just hoping its not the steering rack cause that would be a costly fix.

Any ideas on the chilton's/hayes manual by chance?

Thanks,
Joe

I know I haven't found one yet but I found something else which will be very helpful for me since I have an 04. I have pretty much the same pop that you describe and I'm positive it is the ISS. It just doesn't bother me right now. I'll eventually replace it with the updated ISS.

It does sound like the ISS to me, but it could also be the front strut mounts like dmasjz45 mentioned. There is a ball bearing inside that allows the front struts to pivot when you turn the steering wheel, and eventually they wear out.

I have a GM repair manual on DVD for $25 shipped if your interested. It covers EVERY repair on your car, and it has pictures to help you out. I can send it along with your brackets Joe.

Just finished up a good test drive after lubing up my shaft and wow does it feel great.

Took about hour and a half (thanks flip for link, bartman and barkat over at clubgp for your write ups) and it really went very smoothly.

Afterwards there was no pop sound like I was having before, no more feedback through the wheel like there was.

Thanks all for all of your help and suggestions,
Joe
