The tires are size 245/40 zr18 93w. What does the z mean and what is 93w?

- H: 130 mph or 210 km/h
- V: 149 mph or 240 km/h
- Z: in excess of 149 mph or 240 km/h plus
- W: 168 mph or 270 km/h
- Y: 186 mph or 300 km/h

40 = Height of sidewall as a percentage of tread width
Z = Speed rating (general...over 149mph)
18 = Wheel size

93 = Load rating
W = Speed rating (specific...168mph)

so when im getting new tires do i have to get 93w or not

Go with the same load rating (93) or higher. You don't have to get W speed rated tires unless you plan on going over 168 MPH.
