I've had some odd clunking from the driver's side front corner lately, and the steering has felt "off". Jacked up the front end, and found there is play if I grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, and nothing at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. The outer tie rod end did not move with the play in the wheel. Passenger's side showed no movement. All testing was done with the opposite side wheel on the ground. If it is the outer tie rod end, should I bother to change the passenger's side as well? I'll already be in there replacing the sway bar end links all around, the rubber on them is shot from having the struts out a few times.

go out and take the vehicle in slow tight circles with the window down. Listen for unusual clunking. If your going to be replacing the drivers side i would personally do the passenger side as well

Sounds like a bad tie rod end to me. I'd replace both then get it aligned to make sure everything is within spec. You don't have to, but if you're doing the job in the first place, mind as well replace both to even things up.
