Does anyone autocross these cars. I'd like to take mine and run in stock class. Any tips for driving these cars? I'm coming from driving an 89 Camaro RS V6, big difference in power and handling I know. What are good setups for running in stock class?

I expect that Vic Smalls will be in here soon. He prolly has the most experience with it.

I will be autocrossing mine for the first time on November 2, 2008 at Langley Speedway down in Hampton, VA. I can't wait, I have a feeling my new nickname might be cone killer though . So any pointers that anyone has would be great.

This will be the first time that my car has ever been on a track of any sorts. I have 1 month from today to prepare for this. So keep the pointers, tips, and anything else coming. Hopefully I will get some good footage as well, along with some good pictures.

lol, I'm here

Ahhh autocrossing. A lot to cover on that subject but I will give a quick run down.

For starters, make sure you have the basics down when it comes to the car. If you have a problem with your car chances are you will have car problems at the event. Atleast with my car I can say that the power steering is the car's biggest fault. Mine got over worked the first few times at events and whined something nasty. Next up is tires... are you running your street tires? and are they in good shape?

After you have that figured out you can fast forward to the day of the event. Get all the useless shit out of your car including floor mats for sure. Make sure you have a snell approved helmet. Get the car though tech. Usually the event will have a course walk or drive to get you familiar with the track setup. Take your time with this and get a good idea where all of the turns are at because you do not want to go out get lost.

I do not know that level of suspension/power modification you have done to your car, but that will make a huge difference in how you drive the car at the track. The key is to be smooth. If you go balls to the wall into a turn and slam on the brakes the front is going to push out and you are gonna have a hard time getting around that corner. You should be looking ahead at least one corner so you can setup your speed and angle of departure when you are leaving for the next corner.

Please ask any questions you might have and I will follow this thread. I could go on all day about the general topic, but you know time is money so I am keeping it short and sweet.

I have only made it out to a full track day at a high speed track once this year (think watkins glen)
Here are a few pics from a small autox and a short vid of a autox lap.

PS. Hope you are not so modified that you are in SM - street modified. You will be against modified EVO's STI's 350Z c5, c6, ect

Looks like you might be. Tube trailing arms and catless DP put me in SM.

That seems a little extreme. I've never done auto-x...think it could be fun, though I'd rather run the car on an actual road course, like Watkin's Glen, Road America, that sort of thing.

I could definitely do Watkin's Glen. I know the place well enough from running it on the NASCAR sims. It's closer than Infineon, too. Though, Road America is only a couple hours from me, if I remember right.

BTW, I've run a stretch of road that connects Merrill WI & Tomahawk WI. It is 23.2 miles long, and is full of curves and hills. The car is faster now (top speed was 126mph then, near 150mph now), and I'm more confident in myself AND the car. Then, I covered that 23.2 miles in 17m 15s. I don't see why I couldn't pull a 16m 55s run, or faster now. The transmission HATED me for it, but for the most part the brakes and engine could have cared less.

I have an 89 Camaro that I autocrossed some so I'm familiar with everyting. I'm still learning alot though and was looking for knowledge about how these cars like to handle. I'll be running in stock for a while.

Thanks for the info. you have supplied so far, very helpful.

Here is a little tid-bit about the run I will be doing:
This is the info & pre-registration page for the FIRST TIMER FREEBIE RUNS before the NASA Mid-Atlantic Championship Autocross #8 at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia on Sunday November 2nd, 2008. These runs around our autocross course are absolutely 100% free and if you have fun, you are welcome to stay and compete in one of the regular heats for a regular entry fee ($45 members / $55 nonmembers in advance, $50 members / $60 nonmembers on site.)

The only requirement is that you are a first time autocross participant who is at least 18 years of age with a valid drivers license and a car that will pass our tech inspection. Loaner helmets are available for free as well. The FIRST TIMER FREEBIE RUNS will take place for a maximum of 20 entries on another big/fast/fun Langley course (designed by Dale Blankenship, utilizing both the oval and the infield.)

Participants will need to go through registration and tech, walk the course, and attend the drivers meeting with the regular participants. FIRST TIMER FREEBIE RUN drivers should expect several timed runs each, depending on turnout. Only 20 FIRST TIMER FREEBIE RUN spots will be available and advance pre-registration is required.

My mods are listed in my sig below, everything else is pretty much apprearance wise. They have loaner helmets, but I will probably get my own. I also have a copy of the NASA tech ispection form. So I think I am pretty much covered there. I will get some painters tape and tape my wheel wells and lights to prevent rock chips, and have enough left over to make my numbers.

Is there an ideal tire pressure you would suggest that we should run, since we are FWD, and we are usually running against RWDs? I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. I'm also a CompG, but I think I will keep it in drive vs. using TapShift. I'm like you Miranda I don't really like it too much. I will use it from time to time. But I don't drive the way they have it set-up. Meaning I don't drive at 10 and 2. But I guess that is something I will need to do for this, correct? I assume when autocrossing the better handling will come from driving at 10 and 2? I'm just so use to getting in the car and kicking back, and relaxing on my commute home don't even think about it.

For tire pressure I ran 28 lbs in the front and 35 lbs in the rear when I used the 235/50/18 BFG KDWS. After switching to the KDW I ran 255/45/18 in the front @ 25lbs and the 235/50/18 in the rear @ 28lbs.

I do not have tapshift in my beater, but I always keep the car in first though out the tight spots where it can keep the car up in the revs. I almost never get our of second though. I have learned that driving @ 10 and 2 as much as possible is the best practice. Also make sure you plant your right foot in the "dead pedal" spot on the far right. That will help you stay planted and from sliding around.

Thanks for the info. I will try adding a little more air to my rear tires.

Autox is alot of fun. I have not run my GTP yet but have run my LS1 Trans Am many times. We have a local sports car club that sets up at many different locations so it always a different setup.

i autox'd last year, my friend does it alot and i never thought it was that great until i did it. i ran with a broken sway bar(didnt know at the time), and only suspension mod was a front STB. keep the car in 2nd, its you best bet because you dont need to go that fast, and you dont want any 3rd gear shifts, but i foud a lot of 2-1 downshifts that would piss me off. and like vic said do not go balls out into a turn, i did it for the hell of it and got the car sideways, but it was my fastest run lol. i think i finished 16 out of 25 in the non bmw class, which wasnt bad considering gp's handle absolutely horrible. cons to it is it eat up my right front, brakes are "hilled and valleyed" now, and might of worn out a strut. i cant wait when i get out of college and get a g8, actually have a car thats good for autox lol
