depends on if they take the motor out or not. Either way its gunna cost you, because shop labor isnt cheap these days

Yeah, it's going to be pricey, that's all I know. The motor at least has to be dropped down so the cam can clear the frame rail (or pulled out completely depending on what the shop wants to do as Kaleb mentioned). And labor rates being around 90-125ish an hour (at least around here), it's not going to be cheap. If you're having a shop do stuff like that, you may want to stick to rockers since that's a quicker and much easier job.

average is a 14-18hr job depending on shop

book is 18hr as it calls for engine removal shops will use that to base the price off of

(this is why most dealers now just to R&R if engines as it is cheaper for them and the customer)

yup. low end for a good shop would be 75/hr you could find cheaper but i would not let them touch my car

and that is why when there is a cam failure most shops long block the engine. it takes less tie and cost less for the customer and the shop

It can be done miuch quicker. When I pulled the l36 out of the 97 it was about 4 hours.

When I first got the 01 I spent about 3 days of acctual work before I drove it.

Day one was pulling the motor out of the 01 ( taking my time and not really rushing, starting late and quitting early. About 6-8 hours).

Day 2 was pull the motor from the 97. Clean the engine bay of 01 with pressure washer, clean motor a little and put a little paint on the block. Towards the late afternoon put motor in car and spent several hours hooking things up ( about 10-12 hours that day)

Day three was about 3 hours of little things like wiring and coolant , drove it into town that evening.

Not bad for pulling two and reinstalling one. Need to finish putting the next motor together and get them swapped out. Hopefully will have it together for lanes show on the 28th. Guess we'll see.

I just looked on ZZP's website and they get $550 to $600 for a cam install. They don't state any time, just the total labor cost for the install. Lower price is for an install of one of their cams and the higher if you provide the cam. May give you an idea of the cost at a shop.

Buddy and I can do a cam install, timing chain, valve springs/retainers in around 12 hours. We used to do them for free, and we were getting taken advantage of, so now we charge $500.00, and split it 50/50. We still do a lot of mods for free, but BIG things like this that take a day, we have to charge, but its discounted.

Most any shop you will ask and go to, will want around $800.00 easily. AND you run the risk of them screwing something up because they are not familiar with the engine/platform.
