I have a 97 GP GT and want to supercharge it. I am undecided whether to top swap or just drop in an engine from a GTP.

I have a couple of problems.

The most of my worries is the damn 4t60e trans that i know i have to switch to a 4t65e.

Second is the mileage on my engine (150k) if i go with the top swap how will the bottom end hold up?.

Third is that i think my a/c compressor is just about shot which will add to the price if i top swap since i will probably replace if i do the top swap.

I was wondering which option you think would be cheaper or more beneficial and when i change the tranny is it a direct swap, if not what else do i need?
thanks in advance.

Swap a whole GTP package. Much much easier on you. Also, that way your original L36 and 4T60E is complete and sellable.

k thanks.
Any ideas about how many miles would be too many when to buying and engine and trans. I know the N/A's have a reputation of lasting around 200k +. how about the S/C'd ones?

Any ideas how much my engine and trans would go for at 150k with the a/c condensor starting to go?

if i grabbed a top swap kit from ed morad that contained:
heads
valve covers
lower intake manifold
injectors
fuel rail
supercharger
TB (no maf)
vac lines
idler pullies
brackets
balancer

what else would i need and what would gaskets run me?

Yeah, if you tried to use the 4T60E to back up a top swapped L36, you'd probably get one burnout/hard acceleration, and it would say kcuf you. LOL

the trans in stock form will not last long.. (possibly if the motor is stock, mine was cammed) but either way it will not be happy.

as for the motor if your looking to save some money use what you have. it will last fine for some time.( not to mention that if you want a BIG build in the future then you allready have the compression for it. (i know from doing it) if your not going to wild then just drop a good s/c setup in there and dont worry about the motor.

for the trans swap i do belive that you will need both harnesses (engine and trans) the newer style computer (the physical plugs are different and will not interchange.) and i forget if the pinout is different or not.

but yah. it is fairly involved, but the only true way to make a trans last well under a modded buld in them.

for reference i have a 97 gt that i had in the mid/low 13's with an xp build (it did not last but a few months driving it with the trans stock, i had it rebuilt and later snapped my pump shaft on the trans, got a rebuilible trans cheap and robbed the pump saft for mine and am still driving it. (currently has a "stock" l67 in it. hai, zzp 1.0 modded catless/ubend delete stock dp.))
an 01' gt (same motor from 97)

and a buddy with a 96 bonnie ssei (same stupid vac assist trans)

not lookin to race just want a bit quicker car.

i think i'm just gonna buy a engine/trans combo from Ed Morad for like $1500. I think it would be way easier and in the end cheaper than a top swap mainly because of my stupid trans.

While i got the engine out what else should i invest in if i plan to go to smaller pulley sizes later?

Anything that helps air flow.

if your going with morad, would probly be easier to just get the wireing and computer and everything from him at once. he should know what all you will need for that swap just be sure to let them know that is what your doing. and they should be albe to hook yo up with all the parts, and may even know about the pin out and if there is any other items you may have to change.

as for smaller pully, if your even thinking about a cam while the motor is out is hands down the best time to do it. most everything else are basic bolt on stuff that can be done later if your wanting to do them.

also dont forget that if you go with an hd trans you will need a gtp pass side axel shaft. it is shorter than the gt shaft.

The guys at Morad Parts Company are great and they will get you what you need. As for mods, don't even think about PEM's or that crap. Get headers and do it right the first time.
