Hello,

I have a basic question regarding torque and hp with respect to modding my GTP. I have modded my vehicle and I am happy with the performance. I like the amount of torque my vehicle has, and in fact, I would love to increase the low end torque that I currently have to get an increased “pushed in the seat” feeling. As many of you know, I am considering headers, which will help net another 10 -15 hp, but I have read that I could lose some torque. Can you all explain how one would gain more torque and would adding headers reduce my current torque? I appreciate your assistance.

Thanks.

the short take is. the headers will drop your torque a little but you will be able to do other mods that will bring hp and toruqe back up..

You lose the low end torque because there is less backpressure in the exhaust with headers. But, like bigdog said, once you open up the exhaust, you'll open up the doors for other mods that will bring the horsepower and torque numbers up even further.

Thanks -
So what mods would be necessary to bring back the torque after headers and even provide more torque?

3.5 or 3.4 depending on Knock.

That is it?? wow..I was thinking I would have to get rockers and a cam.

I can handle dropping from a 3.6 to 3.5 or 3.4 :) and get more torque than I do today.

hmmm...im pretty sure ive read that you should only do rockers or a cam...correct me if im wrong...and to go to a 3.4 i think you may need some more mods than what you have but im not sure...im a lowly N/A at the moment so the more experienced guys can jump in, im only going on what im pretty sure ive read...

Depending on your knock seed you should be able to stay with a 3.6 pulley and not really lose too much torque with headers. When I put headers on and went driving with 3.8" stock on I noticed torque loss, but that was replaced when I dropped to a 3.6". Depending on knock your getting you may be able to even go farther from there with a 3.5. I'm thinking you would start seeing knock after a 3.5..... As this would be similar to running a 3.25, 3.3 on a 97-03 and you may need intercooler, cam, etc to be able to run knock free.

Best of luck, it really depends what knock you are seeing and what your tune is like.

A 3.6 with bumped up timing would be a good place to start, after a tune (which is when timing would be changed anyhow). Once you're there you can decide if you're happy with the car. Then in a few months when you're bored with it again, we can lead to towards the next mod. Or if you want to skip all that, just go turbo :P
