That is 105# for the exhaust valves and 130# for the intake valves. I read that this helps longevity of the timing chain, especially a stock timing chain. Thoughts, opinions? I'm not sure if our vendors will sell only 6 of each, I sent an email to the WBS and I'm waiting to hear back from Mike. If this route is doable, only question I have is what retainers and locks should I use? Would I have to use different retainers and locks for the 105s versus the 130s or could I use the same for each? I currently have Comp 105s that I installed in June 2005 and the springs are showing valve float with 160,000 miles, I'm seeing elevated boost above 6k. I have an XP cam and would like to continue taking advantage of the power it makes. I don't want to go all 130s because then I'll have to use a double chain and I don't want to remove the balancer nor mill the front cover, I'd prefer to stick with a stock Cloye chain if I can which is what I'm currently using on my 105s. I use to have a single Rollmaster and that broke at 100,000 miles so they don't last any longer than a stock chain. But I'm thinking of switching to 130s for the intakes. Thoughts, opinions? TIA.

The first question I would ask is:

Did you experience valve float when the Comp springs were new?

I've heard a lot of not so good things about Comp springs from the guys up here and on the Buick G/N boards.
Their springs just don't seem to hold up in the long term.
Maybe a set of K Motion,Crower or Crow springs?

David, I ran comp 105's on the stock timing chain for 40K miles with no issues at all. For your application I'd recommend crow cams 110# springs. IIRC they have an installed seat pressure close to the 105's (compared to 90# LS6 springs) which is a lot easier on the stock timing chain.

There you go.
Makes sense to me.
What you will find with machines is that the least amount of stress you can put on a component to get the job done, the better.
Sounds like Kyle knows this.

Definitely. I understand wanting to change out your 105's after 160K on them and noticing some valve float (IIRC, someone did a test of comp 105 springs after just a few thousand miles and they were already performing worse than a set of 90# LS6 spings that were used for much longer).

Another set of 105's would probably be fine, but the crow 110#'s are about the same price, have a lower seat pressure than LS6 springs and 130# springs so they're easier on the timing chain, and I've heard nothing but good things about the crow 110#'s.

I love my LS6 yellows. 15k+, xp cam, 6400+ shifts, not a single issue.

2006-2009 Comp Cam Springs = junk. Go with the Crow Cams springs unless you can find an older batch of comp cams.

Thanks for the replies! Were are you finding these Crow 110s? I'm only seeing 105s from our vendors? Can someone show me were I can get 110s? And you're saying the 110s have a lower seat pressure than the 130s AND the LS6 springs? Where are these 110s? And if someone misspoken and meant 105s instead, is the seat pressure still lesser than all of the rest? I guess the bottom line is Crow 105s , 110s or LS6s?

Thanks!

I sent an e-mail to PRJ asking which timing chain I should use and what springs I should run, This is the reply I got, hopefully it helps.

Quote:
Do NOT uses a single roller chain. Ever. Use a factory chain and dampener if you aren't going to use a double roller. The single roller is weaker than the factory chain, and it will distroy the factory dampener in only a few thousand miles (if the chain doesn't fail by then)

We've run 170# springs with the Rollmaster Double roller for over 20K miles and the chain was fine.

If you are going to run an XP cam, run 130# springs and a double roller.

The PBM and Si Valve 105/110 springs have a very low spring rate which reduces stress on the factory chain/dampener, but you won't want to run either with an XP cam. The PBM's require shims and LS1 retainers to get the proper install height/seat pressure. The SiValves springs just LS1 retainers.

Paul is the 3800 God, he knows his shit. I would agree with his advice but I don't feel like replacing the chain and buying a milled front cover, arghhh. Thanks.

One thing that you might want to remember when choosing a spring for your combo is the pressure "over the nose" of the cam.
That counts for as much as seat pressure.

I think whoever goes by the username "Janice" over on CGP knows where to get 110# springs. I never used them, but I've heard a lot of good things about them.

I found these on ZZP's site, but i know people were talking about crow 110# springs as well.

GTPpower who is local to me and the one that said to contact PRJ said they have 110# springs. Thats one of the things I asked about in my e-mail, however I never got a direct response as to if they carried them or not.
