I'm driver of a 2000 GTP, I'm wondering what would be some inexpensive mods that would add power and also a little growl to my car. From what I've read I should probably:
1. Get a K&N CAI.(Why does CAI make the s/c whine more?)
2. Buy a zzp downpipe(2.5'' if im staying with stock exhaust or 3'' if I'm gonna upgrade my exhaust later).

Mods like that would only be a couple hundred dollars to do... so i'm trying to stay in that range.
Anyone have some advice where I should be shopping for some good deals?

intake makes the whine louder cuz its not in an airbox to keep it quiter. a cone filter on any car will make more noise. as for mods id start with the downpipe and intake then move on to a plog if you dont wanna spend a lot on headers. plog made a massive difference on my car. after that you can start dropping pulley sizes. but buy a scanner to check for kr after each mod

supercharged or turbo 3"
n/a 2.5"

but i would get an overkilled pcm
but def get a down pipe and catback / intake for a quick pick me up

then drop the t-stat
get a pcm
colder spark plugs
smaller s/c pulley in no *kr

For the best gains I would do a CAI (not k&n) and a downpipe. The exhaust is the most restrictive part on these cars. Cat-backs are more for sound rather than performance. Unless you are pushing out over 300hp. If you want sound, just change out the mufflers. There should be some exhaust clips in a section so you can get an idea of what you like. A method of scanning (either scan gauge or aeroforce) would be a great thing to have as well. Overkill does make one hell of a pcm, but I believe they are closed for the winter. (he is in canada)

any cai is fine. theres nothing wrong with the k&n but its not a true cai, its actually a hai.

i would recommend a wizair cai, a 3" downpipe (gtps should never, ever run a 2.5" downpipe) the u-bend is also replaced by the downpipe, which is the most restrictive part of the exhaust.

once youre more comfortable modding i would reccomend installing 1.9 modified stock rockers and headers, both can be had used for cheap.

once you have rockers and headers you should be safe to drop sc pulley size.

this was very helpful and informative. I've been looking and I saw wizair and I'd like to get that since it appears to be just as much as a k&n intake. I live in Virginia, do you guys think the wet/moist air will damage the car at all?

what is great about overkills pcm's?

not at all. i have a fwi in my car and its really rainy and snowy here in the mountains of jersey and i never had a problem with water or moist air. overkill pcms seem to have just better tunes than other pcms. will can tune it for your specific mods and ive never heard a bad thing bout him. im actually thinking about switching to an overkill pcm from my zzp one. anyone wanna buy a zzp pcm? :D

You can just send your zzp pcm to Will and he will give you a discount on one of his pcm's. Check out his website for more info;

I just got my plog installed last week. Holy sh*t did it ever make a difference. The first 2 days my car was actually slower for some reason, I think it just needed some time to adjust. Now a week later and I didn't expect it to make as much difference as it did. Can't wait to get this 3.6 on.

Yea I would buy a CAI kit or a K&N Cone, a new downpipe, a diffrent PCM or reflash the one you have, and would go with a U-bend delete plus a high flow cat would definatly make your GTP have some attitude and wouldnt make you spend a whole lot.

i would recommend starting with the exhaust manifolds either port them or get PLOGS then the DP with U-bend delete. then wizair intake.
i started with home done ported exhuast manifolds, high flow cat, high flow muffler, 180* drilled thermostat, and a home made intake before doing a pulley.
so hope fully this helps

I actually have had these same questions when I first started going to school for this so naturally I asked the teacher, I would like to note that he has at least a bachaelors degree although it might be a doctorate in the engine field, and he told me that what you hear after adding the CAI is not the supercharger whine, but the sucking of the engine through the filter. The sucking noise is probably louder because the box is not muffling the sound anymore. Also, since the area above the CAI is not completly blocked off, you will pull air from above as well as below which makes water on the ground less of a threat because you will not be sucking air strictly from below, kind of like an acumulator in an A/C system. As for the downpipe, I am not sure but if you think about it, even if you do not go to a 3" system, it still would not hurt to have the dropped resistance.

^^^ you could loose bottom end w/o enough resistance

These 3.8 engines make enough torque down low anyhow that to lose a little could be to your advantage.
