My gf's car has had some smoke coming from the front of the engine. Started a couple weeks ago. It only starts when the car gets warmed up. She says it smells like coolant burning. The engine temp doesn't go above normal though. What should I be looking at? Gaskets to check? etc.

Thanks in advance.

What kind of car & year ???

If it's a GP the front valve cover gasket - this is under recall (free fix)

Coolant smell... it could be the plastic coolant eblow.

lower intake gasket is probabaly shot. the smoke would probablay be from leaking valve covers though.

Would it be ok to put some coolant stop leak in her system until I can get the chance to get in there and replace the gasket? Think that would work, or other suggestions/opinions?

Any reason why not?

With the car being 3 hours away from home, it would need to get back there in order for it to be fixed. Would it be able to make that trip?

Also looking for more info on the coolant stop leak question, would it be ok to put that in, would it help restore the gasket enough to make the 180 mi. trip or would it do more harm than good?

You can try, but I've never had much luck with the stuff. If you were only going 50 miles I might give it a try, but with it being 180 miles I'd be worried about ruining the heads.

Talked to my uncle who's a shop manager at a GM dealership and he said I could get the car back home as long as it's leaking externally(which it is so far) and to keep an eye on the oil color and make sure there is enough coolant in the overflow tank. So we're going to be touch and go with it til we can get it fixed.

Yeah, My LIM gasket blew out on the front bank between the passenger side cylinder and the middle one. Mine never smoked...just blew up. But, it drank a gallon of coolant in 400 miles to get itself in trouble. Definitely do the LIM gaskets with the aluminum ones, and then look the rest of it over and maybe bypass the TB coolant passage, and things like that.

do not put stop leak in the coolant...please. it will seal the leaks and seal the coolant passages in the block.

Stop leak is a pain and you will end up suffering in the long run, cleaning & repairs of coolant passages. Lower intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, & oil pan gasket is typical for blow out on these models unfortunately...
